At least one piece of Matt Rhule’s coaching staff at Nebraska appears to be in place.

HuskerOnline has confirmed that long-time Rhule assistant Evan Cooper is expected to join him at Nebraska.

The Miami native Cooper was with Rhule at Temple, Baylor and Carolina. He was let go by the Panthers this month.

Cooper worked in the personnel department at Temple before being promoted to cornerbacks coach and recruiting coordinator at Baylor.

During his time at Baylor, Cooper played an instrumental role in securing three consecutive top-35 recruiting classes.

Cooper’s social media tells the story

Another clue on Cooper is he began following both Husker commits Malachi Coleman and Dwight Bootle on Twitter. Coleman and Bootle have already made tweets publicly acknowledging the hire of Rhule.

Cooper also began following several potential 2023 recruiting targets as he transitions into his new role. He was involved this morning with the offer to Omaha Westside wide receiver Jaylen Lloyd.

Coaches can hit the road starting Friday to begin in-home visits. Early signing day is Dec. 22. The Huskers have 15 commitments in their class of 2023. All of NU’s current commits will be allowed to take another official visit to Lincoln in the coming weeks. There are three weekends in December to host recruiting visitors.

It’s unknown how many of the 2023 commitments will remain on board with Rhule and how much bigger the class size might be.

A big piece of the puzzle will be the NCAA transfer portal. Prospects can begin entering the portal starting on Dec. 5. At that point, Rhule will have a much better idea of his overall roster needs and numbers situation.
