Nebraska adds commit from Omaha North DB Donovan Jones
Nebraska added a third in-state player to its 2024 recruiting class. Omaha North defensive back Donovan Jones officially announced his commitment to the Huskers after taking an official visit to Lincoln this week.
Jones was offered by Nebraska this past Saturday after a strong showing at NU’s Friday Night Lights Camp. That same night, he earned an offer from Wyoming at the camp. Matt Rhule and the Husker staff followed with an offer the next morning.
“I love the new coaching and everything,” Jones said. “They treated me well (Friday) at the camp. I have a lot of confidence going there.
“They just saw my junior year tape, and originally they had said they wanted to see my senior year tape. I went to their camp, and the coaches saw how I performed and how my feet were moving.”
Donovan Jones will come to Nebraska as a safety/DB
At 6-foot 1/2, 185 pounds, Jones sees himself more as a safety, but he can play anywhere in the secondary.
He’s now the sixth defensive back recruit in the class of 2024, which is one of the reasons why he didn’t have much time to extend his recruiting process after his Husker offer.
“Since they had a lot of DB offers out there, I had to decide by Saturday night,” Jones said. “They told me I would be one of the top two on their board if I decided by Saturday night.
“I waited to go public with my announcement after my official visit.”
Jones ran 4.52 seconds at the Husker camp in the 40-yard dash and jumped 10-0 in the broad jump. Earlier this month at South Dakota, he went 10-5 1/2 in the broad jump. He also has a 35-inch vertical.

Jones said he has a ton of respect for Rhule and his staff with how they treat camp workouts and the value they put into them.
“I feel that’s respectable. If you ball out in a camp and you’ve got the size, you should get offered,” Jones said. “That’s what they did.”
Earlier this year, Viking head coach Larry Martin gave his thoughts on Jones during the In-State Tour event.
As a junior, Jones was a third-team All-Metro selection. He had 46 total tackles, eight pass break-ups, two interceptions and one touchdown.
“He’s just going to continue to get better. He tests very well,” Martin said. “He came to the Warren Academy camp and has generated a lot of interest.
“Just getting that experience of playing last year was big. He will be very good on the defensive side of the football for us.”
Jones becomes the 15th commitment in the Huskers’ 2024 recruiting class.
