Nebraska awards 12 Blackshirts for the 2024 season

When Nebraska players arrived for Tuesday morning’s practice, Blackshirts were hanging in 12 lockers.
Like last year, head coach Matt Rhule and defensive coordinator Tony White awarded the honorary black practice jerseys to all 11 starters. One backup, defensive lineman Cameron Lenhardt, also received one.
There weren’t many surprises among the recipients. Nine of the players – Nash Hutmacher (0), Jimari Butler (1), Isaac Gifford (2), Marques Buford (3), John Bullock (5), Tommi Hill (6), Malcolm Hartzog (7), DeShon Singleton (8), and Ty Robinson (9) – earned single-digit jersey numbers last week.

Linebackers MJ Sherman and Mikai Gbayor were the two starters without single-digit jersey numbers to earn Blackshirts.
Of this year’s 12 honorees, six received the honor for the second year in a row. Hutmacher, Gifford, Bullock, Hartzog, Singleton, and Robinson all earned Blackshirts to open the 2023 season.
Buford, Butler, Hill, Sherman, Lenhardt, and Gbayor were all first-time recipients.
