Nebraska baseball clinches Purdue series win with a 14-2 Saturday victory

Nebraska baseball has won its last five Big Ten series, with a 2-1 series victory over Purdue. The Huskers cruised to a 14-2 win on Saturday in eight innings to claim the series at Alexander Field in West Lafayette, Ind.

The Huskers end the regular season with a 28-27 overall record and a 15-15 Big Ten record. NU will be the No. 8 seed in the Big Ten Tournament.

Nebraska won game one 11-9 but dropped the second 5-4 after a walk-off 2-RBI home run from Brandon Anderson in the ninth inning.

NU pitched by committee in game three. Five Husker pitchers took the mound on Saturday. As a group, Nebraska allowed six hits, two runs and struck out 12 batters. They gave up eight free bases – four walks, three hit by pitch and one wild pitch.

Lefty Jackson Brockett started and gave up two hits, one walk and one hit-by-pitch in two innings. Left-handed pitcher Gavin Blachowicz pitched one inning, allowing one hit and one run. Righty Pryce Bender gave NU two innings and Purdue two hits and one run.

RHP Caleb Clark didn’t allow a hit or run and had three strikeouts in his 1 1/3 innings. Righty Blake Encarnacion lasted 2/3 innings after one hit, one walk and one strikeout. Lefty Grant Cleavinger pitched the final three outs, allowing one walk and two strikeouts.


Offensive explosion

Nebraska baseball got help from everyone in its lineup against Purdue. The Huskers recorded 15 hits for 14 runs. They had more opportunities as NU left 13 runners on base.

11 Huskers recorded a hit and nine had an RBI in NU’s win over the Boilermakers. Nebraska scored runs in its first four innings to build a 9-1 lead.

Case Sanderson led the charge with a two-RBI single up the middle in the top of the first to get Nebraska on the board. NU continued its momentum with four runs off three hits and one error in the second inning.

In the top of the eighth, pinch-hitter Cael Frost came in and hit a two-RBI home run to right center. Frost boosted the Huskers to a 12-2 lead in the eighth. His homer put Nebraska in a position to run-rule the Boilermakers.

Hayden Lewis added an RBI single, and Dylan Carey cracked an RBI double to center to take a 14-2 lead in the eighth. Carey added two RBI.

Catcher Will Jesske went 4-of-5. He didn’t record an RBI but scored three runs. Second baseman Cayden Brumbaugh went 2-of-3 at the plate with one RBI and scored one run.

Next, the Huskers are the No. 8 seed in the Big Ten Tournament at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Neb. The tournament begins on Tuesday, May 20, and the championship is on Sunday, May 25.

They will play on Tuesday, May 20 at 6 p.m. CT vs. the No. 12 seed, which is either Illinois or Michigan State.

Nebraska is the defending Big Ten Tournament Champion.
