Nebraska Baseball Honors Greg Sharpe With Gritty Win Over Vanderbilt

Nebraska baseball was playing for something extra Saturday night in front of a strong Husker crowd in Arizona. On Friday, longtime Nebraska radio broadcaster Greg Sharpe lost his battle with cancer. The Huskers’ performance against Vanderbilt reflected the same toughness and resilience Sharpe showed the entire state of Nebraska.

Gabe Swansen stepped up to the plate in the top of the seventh inning after Case Sanderson drew a walk. Nebraska held a 4-3 lead, with Swansen already responsible for all four RBIs. He delivered his third extra-base hit of the day, crushing a two-run home run over the left-center field wall. That swing extended the Huskers’ lead to 6-3, a margin they would not relinquish.
Nebraska bullpen shows promise
The Nebraska bullpen gave Husker fans plenty of reason for optimism. Sophomore Ty Horn delivered a solid start, going four innings while striking out six and allowing two earned runs. The bullpen then took over for the final five innings, guiding Nebraska to the finish line against one of the most talented lineups in college baseball.
Left-hander Jalen Worthley earned the win, throwing 1.2 innings without allowing an earned run. He then handed the ball to Tucker Timmerman, who embodied the fight that Sharpe was known for. Timmerman pitched 2.1 innings, allowing one earned run, but his biggest moment came in the bottom of the eighth inning.
With Nebraska leading 6-4, Vanderbilt loaded the bases, creating its last major opportunity to turn the game around. Timmerman had just allowed a run on an infield single when a ball rocketed off the bat at 106 mph struck him directly in the face. The ball deflected to Sanderson, who completed the play to escape the jam. Timmerman remained down for several minutes before getting up and rallying the Nebraska crowd, blood running down his face and his eye swollen shut.

Nebraska’s offense comes alive
The Huskers’ offense looked far sharper than in their season opener. Nebraska jumped on Vanderbilt early, taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Cayden Brumbaugh set the tone with a leadoff single before Swansen stepped up with the bases loaded. He delivered his first clutch swing of the night, driving a shot into left-center field to clear the bases.
Swansen powered the offense all night, finishing 3-for-4 with a home run, two doubles, and six RBIs—an incredible performance. Brumbaugh also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-5.
Looking ahead
Nebraska will return to action Sunday against San Diego State, with first pitch set for 6 p.m. CT. The Huskers will hand the ball to Will Walsh as they look to carry their momentum forward.
