Nebraska baseball outlasts Michigan 3-2 behind strong Tucker Timmerman start

Nebraska baseball (25-25, 12-13) outlasted Michigan (31-18, 14-11) 3-2 behind a great performance from right-handed pitcher Tucker Timmerman at Haymarket Park in Lincoln, Neb.
Timmerman earned his third start of the season. He allowed five hits, one run and struck out five in a career-high seven innings and a career-high 99 pitches. Timmerman missed two months due to a facial injury he suffered against Vanderbilt. He has pitched in seven games since.
Righty Drew Christo lasted one out. He allowed two hits and walked a batter. RHP Luke Broderick took over with the bases loaded and one out. Broderick earned his 10th save of the season. He didn’t allow a hit or run in 1 2/3 innings and struck out two.

Michigan started right-handed pitcher Kurt Barr, who lasted six innings. He allowed six hits, three runs and struck out seven in 107 pitches. He walked five batters, hit one and had one wild pitch. The 6-foot-3 junior did a nice job of working with his back against the wall.
Case Sanderson paced Nebraska baseball by going 3-of-4 at the plate. Riley Silva and Hogan Helligso recorded one RBI each.
Michigan strikes first, Huskers take lead
The Wolverines took advantage of a lead-off walk by Timmerman. Brayden Jefferies‘ single to the pitcher helped Cole Casillas score and U of M go up 1-0 in the first.
Nebraska had a shot with back-to-back lead-off singles. But Robby Bolin was called out at home, and Gabe Swansen was caught stealing second. The Huskers had runners on second and third with no outs and didn’t score.
Joshua Overbleek and Case Sanderson hit back-to-back singles to start the second inning, too. But this time, Nebraska capitalized. Riley Silva cracked an RBI double down the right field line. Sanderson scored thanks to a wild pitch from Barr to go up 2-1 in the second.

Timmerman settled in nicely after giving up a run in the first and hitting two batters with a pitch in the third. He allowed two hits and no runs over four innings.
The Huskers added one run to build a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Helligso grounded out to short but helped Overbleek, who was a lead-off walk, score. Sanderson was caught in a pickle between third and home and tagged out. NU left the bases loaded and squandered an opportunity to bust open the game.
Things got worrisome for the Huskers once Timmerman was relieved after seven innings. Christo loaded the bases with one out and was replaced by Broderick. He walked his first batter for Michigan to cut NU’s lead to 3-2. But Overbleek turned a ground ball into a double play to end the inning.
Broderick and the Husker defense retired all three batters in the ninth. He threw back-to-back strikeouts to give Nebraska baseball a huge Friday night victory.
