Along with navigating the transfer portal season, Nebraska head coach Fred Hoiberg has also searched for a new full-time assistant coach.

On Wednesday night, HuskerOnline confirmed that NU found its guy in Wyoming assistant Pat Monaghan. The Huskers confirmed the hire on Thursday morning.

“Pat is a well-rounded coach who is an excellent teacher, strong in skill development and a relentless recruiter,” Hoiberg said in a release. “In talking with other coaches who have worked with Pat over the years, the things they bring up are his work ethic and his ability to connect with players.

“He’s been a part of building successful programs at different levels and has experience in the Midwest at both the Division I and junior college levels. I am excited to have him join the Husker basketball coaching staff.”

Monaghan fills the opening left by Adam Howard, who left NU last month to join the staff at North Carolina State. He also served one season with the Cowboys, but Monaghan brings nearly 20 years of coaching experience with him to Lincoln.

He becomes Nebraska’s seventh assistant coach over what will be Hoiberg’s seventh season with the Huskers.

Monaghan brings defense, recruiting to Nebraska’s staff

Known as a successful recruiter and a defensive-minded coach, Monaghan followed UW head coach Sundance Wicks to Laramie after helping lead Green Bay to an 18-win season in 2023-24.

Before joining Wick’s staff, he coached four seasons at Southern Illinois (2019-23), where he helped land former Illinois transfer standout Marcus Domask. Monaghan also spent two seasons at Milwaukee (2017-19) and six seasons at Division II powerhouse Minnesota State University (2011-17).

Monaghan’s work helped earn him invitations to the 2022 Jay Bilas Coaches Leadership Program and then the 2024 Top Connect Basketball Symposium. Both events aim to identify top up-and-coming assistants who could potentially become future Division I head coaches.

“I am extremely humbled and appreciative for the opportunity to join Coach Hoiberg and his outstanding staff,” Monaghan said in a release. “The momentum Coach and his staff have built over the last couple years is exciting, along with the loyal and passionate fan base that is one of the best in the country.

“I am looking forward to developing relationships on campus and in the community. I can’t wait to get to Lincoln and get to work.”
