Nebraska drops series opener to Maryland, 12-5

Nebraska baseball (19-23, 7-12 Big Ten) fell 12-5 to Maryland (20-23, 5-13) on Friday night in game one of their weekend series.
The game flipped in the seventh inning. After trailing 6-4, Nebraska cut the deficit to one on a two-out RBI double to left-center by Tyler Stone. It felt like the Huskers were grabbing momentum. However, Maryland answered immediately with a five-run seventh inning to break the game open.

The Terps started the inning with a leadoff walk, and two batters later, Hollis Porter launched a two-run home run to center. Two batters after that, Maryland hit another homer to push the lead to 10-5. A walk and an RBI single extended the Terps’ advantage to 11-5.
Pitching struggles set tough tone for Huskers
Will Walsh did not deliver the start Nebraska needed, lasting just three innings and allowing five earned runs on five hits. Right-hander Tucker Timmerman entered early and allowed a leadoff home run to the first batter he faced but settled in with scoreless fifth and sixth innings. He finished with 3.2 innings pitched, allowing five earned runs on six hits while striking out six. Maryland finished 6-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

Offensively, Nebraska tallied nine hits. Joshua Overbeek and Dylan Carey each recorded multi-hit games. The Huskers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, highlighted by a solo home run from Cayden Brumbaugh in the first inning, but could not maintain the edge. Stone, Carey and Overbeek also recorded extra-base hits. Colin Cymbalista started at designated hitter in place of Case Sanderson.
Nebraska and Maryland resume the series Saturday at 1 p.m. CT. Ty Horn (1-4, 7.15 ERA) will get the start for the Huskers, who are currently on the outside looking in for the Big Ten Tournament and in need of a big weekend turnaround.
