The latest domino of Nebraska’s offseason roster attrition fell on Tuesday, as Quaran McPherson entered his name into the NCAA Transfer Portal.

The redshirt freshman guard spent the past two seasons in Lincoln but never appeared in a game for the Huskers. McPherson redshirted his first year in 2021-22 and then suffered a season-ending knee injury last summer.

That was his second significant knee injury in four years, as he also lost the second half of his junior season in 2019.

The 6-foot-3, 197-pound native of Queens, N.Y., committed to NU in the 2021 class after a post-graduate year at Link Prep in Branson, Missouri.

McPherson averaged 19 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game to help lead Link Prep to a 26-4 record and a runner-up finish at the 2021 Post Grad Nationals.

During his redshirt year, he impressed Nebraska’s coaches with his defensive tenacity and vocal leadership.

“If you can’t defend nobody, you can’t play at no level,” McPherson said back in 2021. “Like, ‘Q’s ready to actually get down and defend someone, no matter who it is. Doesn’t care who’s in front of him. He’s going to bring that every day. It doesn’t matter if he’s tired or anything; he’s going to play defense.’

“I know if my offense isn’t clicking, I can always rely on my defense. If you get a steal, get yourself going, get a dunk, now it changes the energy of the game.”

McPherson joins fellow redshirt freshmen Oleg Kojenets and Denim Dawson as Nebraska’s offseason departures.

The Huskers now have three available scholarships for the 2023-24 season.
