Nebraska lands commit from Georgia Tech transfer portal QB Jeff Sims
Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule landed a big-name quarterback from the transfer portal.
Georgia Tech quarterback Jeff Sims announced his commitment to the Huskers on Sunday.
Sims has played in 24 games in his college career, making 23 starts. He’s completed 364-of-633 passes (57.5%) for 4,464 yards, 30 touchdowns and 23 interceptions. On the ground, he’s rushed for 1,152 yards and 11 touchdowns on 277 attempts (4.2 ypc). On3 ranks Sims as the 18th-best available quarterback in the portal.
He talked more about his decision with HuskrOnline after making his announcement on Twitter.
“I took a visit last week, and I was just thinking about it, and it was a good visit,” Sims said. “That’s where I wanted to be.”
Sims played his college ball for Geoff Collins at Georgia Tech, who succeeded NU head coach Matt Rhule when he left Temple for Baylor. Collins eventually left Temple for Georgia Tech.
“It kind of developed when we met,” Sims said of his relationship with Rhule. “He knows how Nebraska was, and (Rhule) has big expectations for Nebraska. He wants to get it back there, and that’s what I want to do.”
What’s next for Jeff Sims?
With the commit and decision now behind Sims, what’s next?
He will come to Lincoln with three years to play two. Sims said he arrives to campus in mid-January to begin competing for the starting quarterback position.
Last year’s starter Casey Thompson had shoulder surgery when the season ended, and is presumably out for spring practice. Sims said he was made no promises by Rhule, other than an opportunity to compete.

“Like any other quarterback I have to go in there and win it,” Sims said of NU’s open QB job. “Nothing is given. I’m going to have to go in there and work and win the job.”
Beside Nebraska, Sims also took an official visit to Cincinnati this month.
After weighing his options, it was a no-brainer to commit to Rhule and the Huskers.
“I’ve been seeing how they are recruiting, and it seems like they are very aggressive,” Sims said. “I’m going to do everything I can to help them with that.”
Sims also feels like his time at Georgia Tech has prepared him for this opportunity.
“I’m going to do everything I can to win the game,” Sims said. “I’ll do whatever it takes. They are going to get everything out of me.
“The experience definitely (at Georgia Tech) helped me, because I learned a lot from my past experiences. I know things that I have to work on and that I can build on. The experience is definitely a big piece.”
