Nebraska rallies late to avoid sweep at Iowa

Nebraska (16-20, 5-10) used a pair of late-inning rallies and strong bullpen work to knock off first-place Iowa 6-4 on Sunday at Duane Banks Field, avoiding a Big Ten series sweep.
Trailing 4-3 in the top of the eighth inning, Rhett Stokes led off with a walk and later scored the tying run on a double down the right-field line by Max Buettenback. Tyler Stone followed with a ground ball that was mishandled by Iowa’s second baseman, allowing Buettenback to score the go-ahead run on the error.

Bullpen holds strong, Overbeek adds insurance
The Hawkeyes (23-11, 14-4) threatened in the bottom of the eighth with a one-out double and a walk, but Husker closer Luke Broderick came in and shut the door. Broderick struck out the first batter he faced and induced a lineout to escape the jam, then returned for the ninth to pick up a four-out save — allowing no hits or runs.
Joshua Overbeek, who homered earlier in the game, added a key insurance run in the top of the ninth. He led off the inning with a single, and after a sacrifice bunt and a two-out at-bat from Buettenback, the sophomore laced an RBI single into left field to extend the lead to 6-4.

Nebraska’s pitching staff allowed just one earned run despite four defensive errors. Starter Jackson Brockett threw 3.1 innings and gave up one earned run on five hits. Tucker Timmerman made his first appearance since suffering a facial injury against Vanderbilt and delivered 2.1 scoreless innings. Casey Daiss picked up the win in relief before handing the ball to Broderick.
Offensively, Nebraska made the most of limited early opportunities, with three solo home runs accounting for their first three runs. Overbeek tied the game at 1-1 in the third with a deep shot to right, followed by back-to-back solo blasts from Stone and Dylan Carey to make it 3-1 in the fourth.
The win was critical for the Huskers as they continue to battle for positioning in the top 12 of the Big Ten standings, which would secure a conference tournament berth. Nebraska now turns its attention to a Tuesday night showdown at Creighton in Omaha before returning home for a weekend series against Northwestern.
