Nebraska Softball crushes San Jose State and Howard in run-rules

No. 15 Nebraska softball improved to 11-4 overall and 3-2 in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, Calif. The Huskers took down San Jose State 12-4 in six innings and Howard 11-1 in back-to-back run-rules.
Howard is coached by former Husker pitcher Tori Tyson, who was at Nebraska from 2008-11.
Nebraska recorded four straight home runs for the first time against San Jose Stat in Husker historye. Abbie Squier (2 RBI), Ava Kuszak, Jordy Bahl and Sammie Bland had the homers.
Kuszak also launched a three-run home run against Howard. She has 10 homers this season. Kacie Hoffmann had a two-RBI homer vs. San Jose State and a three-RBI homer vs. Howard.

Homers lead Huskers to beat San Jose State 11-4
Hannah Camenzind was Nebraska’s starting pitcher vs. the Spartans. The junior Arkansas transfer allowed three runs and four hits and struck out five batters in 3 1/3 innings. Right-handed pitcher Mia Reynolds started for SJSU. She gave up nine runs and 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings. She recorded two strikeouts and walked three batters.
The Husker recorded five hits before they scored. In the Mary Nutter Classic, Nebraska has struggled to score with runners on base and/or in scoring position. NU broke through in the bottom of the third inning for nine runs.
With two outs, H. Camenzind recorded a three-run single to shortstop that took a bad hop past Ahmiya Noriega. Noriega was charged with a fielding error. Then, H. Camenzind stole home. Squier retired Reynolds with a two-run home run to bring Hoffmann (walked) home.
Right-handed pitcher Ava Conti relieved Reynolds. Conti didn’t last long. Nebraska hit three straight home runs off the sophomore. Kuszak, Bahl and Bland crushed the homers. Reynolds returned to the circle and earned the final out. The Huskers took a 9-0 lead.
The Spartans scored three in the 4th. Shay McDowell hit a single through the left and advanced to second on a throwing error by Bland. Taylor Squires (walked) scored. Haley Reeve earned a triple through the left side for two RBI.
Right-handed pitcher Kylee Magee relieved H. Camenzind with one out and ended the inning quickly. Magee earned the win. She allowed two hits and one run and struck out three batters in 2 2/3 innings.
Nebraska softball falls to No. 15 Duke 3-0 in extra innings
Hoffmann hit her first home run as a Husker to take an 11-3 lead in the fourth. She drove in two runs and recorded NU’s fifth homer.
Aubrie Thomas hit her first homer of the year in the top of the fifth to make it 11-4. Her run held off Nebraska’s run-rule in the fifth inning.
The Huskers ended the game early as Squier hit a double to score Kennadi Williams, H. Camenzind’s pinch runner.

A 9-run inning helps Nebraska crush Howard 11-1
Nebraska started right-handed pitcher Emmerson Cope. She went 3 1/3 innings and allowed four hits and no runs. The sophomore struck out two batters and gave up one walk. Hannah Camenzind replaced Cope. She gave up no hits and no runs in 2/3 innings.
Lefty Caitlin Olensky pitched the last full inning. She allowed four hits, one run and struck out two batters.
Right-handed pitcher Julia Holt started for Howard and pitched three innings. She allowed five hits, four runs and struck out two batters. Righty Ameenah Ballenger relieved Holt with two on and no outs in the bottom of the fourth. She allowed five runs and four hits without retiring a batter. Righty Mia Gonzales finished the game and allowed three hits, two runs and struck out a batter.
The Huskers struck first. Squier hit a lead-off single in the bottom of the third. Bahl doubled to left center to help her score. Cope added a single through the right side for Bahl to get home safe. Nebraska went up 2-0 in the third.
Kuszak and Hoffman helped bust the game open. Kuszak hammered a three-RBI home run to take a 7-0 lead with no outs. Then Hoffmann crushed another three-run home run after Bahl and Bland got on base with singles.
Nebraska recorded nine runs in the fourth inning. Howard’s three different pitchers faced 10 Husker batters before recording an out. They faced 13 Husker batters in the fourth.
Howard recorded four hits in the top of the fifth with Olensky pitching. Lauryn Jones hit a lead-off bunt single. Then Merci Hart crushed an RBI double to put the Bison on the board. Nebraska earned back-to-back outs to end the game with three on base.
