Nebraska softball (41-13, 17-5 Big Ten) handed Southeastern Louisiana (49-15, 21-6 Southland) their first run-rule loss. The Huskers’ offense powered them to a 14-1 win in five innings.

NU advances to the Baton Rouge Regional Championship on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT at Tiger Stadium. Their opponent has not been determined.

The Huskers hit four home runs against the Lions. SLU hadn’t given up four home runs in a game since Nebraska on Feb. 22, 2022. Before Saturday, their pitching staff had allowed 12 home runs.

“Our offense is just so suffocating,” shortstop Ava Kuszak said on ESPN+ after the game. “It’s so fun to be a part of because every single person in this lineup can do so much damage, and it’s just so fun. I literally can’t even get enough of it, because it’s just so contagious and it’s so fun to be a part of.”

Right-handed pitcher Jordy Bahl allowed one hit, one run and struck out three in three innings. The Big Ten Player and Pitcher of the Year threw 44 pitches. She’ll be ready to pitch again in the championship.

Ava Kuszak led the Huskers with a grand slam and Hannah Camenzind added a 3-RBI homer.

In the regional, Nebraska has outscored its opponents 24-3. On Friday, they run-ruled UConn 10-2 in six innings in their first game.

Husker dominance

The Huskers set the tone early vs. the Lions. Hannah Camenzind hit a 3-RBI home run to left field to go up 3-0 in the top of the first. She made SLU pay for two walks and a throwing error.

But Southeastern Louisiana is known for being aggressive, and they were vs. NU in the first inning. Elkhorn, Neb. native Cydnee Schneider sent a single to left field for Shelby Morris, who was walked, to score. But Schneider was tagged out at second to end the inning.

Right-hander Britney Lewinski relieved starter Hallie Burns in the top of the second with two outs and the bases loaded. Third baseman Maria Detillier made a great diving catch of Ava Kuszak‘s hard-hit line drive to save two runs and end the inning.

Kuszak got her revenge with a grand slam in the third inning to go up 10-1. The Huskers scored seven runs in the third. Bella Bacon and Sammie Bland added an RBI each. H. Camenzind scored off a wild pitch.

The Huskers scored four in the fourth. Bahl and Bland hit back-to-back homers to go up 14-1.

H. Camenzind replaced Bahl in the circle in the fourth. SLU went three up and three down. Camenzind didn’t allow a hit or run in two innings.

The Huskers say three different pitchers and recorded four hits against each. Burns allowed three runs, Lewinski gave up seven and Allison Brunson plated four.

Nebraska’s offense thrives despite Bahl’s limited opportunity

SLU’s pitching staff did not give Bahl a hittable pitch until the fourth inning on Saturday. She was walked three times and most looked purposeful. Bahl hit her 20th and 21st home runs of the season against UConn in the regional game. So the choice not to give her a hittable pitch is reasonable.

When they finally gave her a shot, she hit a home run on a high and slightly inside pitch. Bahl now has 22 home runs in 2025 and is tied for the most in program history with Ali Viola (1998).

The rest of Nebraska’s lineup stepped up big time. H. Camenzind started the offense off hot with a 3-RBI homer in the top of the first. Kuszak crushed a grand slam in the third inning to go up 10-1. The Huskers scored seven runs in the third.

Six different Huskers recorded a hit against the Lions. Bahl, Bacon and Bredwell added an RBI each. Bland added two RBIs.

If the Huskers want to make the WCWS, they’ll need everyone to play great.
