Nebraska Softball drops first Big Ten series to Ohio State

No. 20 Nebraska softball (20-8, 1-1) did not start its Big Ten schedule as they had hoped. The Huskers opened Big Ten play with a 1-2 series loss to Ohio State (20-6-1, 1-1) in Columbus, Ohio.
The Huskers scored in four innings to defeat Ohio State 9-5 on Friday night at Buckeye Field. Right-handed pitcher Jordy Bahl pitched the complete game with 133 pitches. She allowed five runs six hits, struck out 12 batters, and walked six.
Saturday’s game turned into a home run derby and scoring marathon on a windy day. The Buckeyes won 13-11 after scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Both teams hit four home runs. The teams combined for 25 hits. NU had 12 hits.
Ohio State captured the series with a 12-6 win on Sunday. Sunday’s game does not count towards either team’s Big Ten records. The conference schedule ensures that each team plays the same number of games.
Jordy Bahl hits career milestone
Bahl earned her 500th career strikeout and 100th strikeout of the 2025 season in the first game vs. the Buckeyes. She has 508 career strikeouts and 108 strikeouts this season.
The right-handed pitcher had a solid performance in game one. She allowed five runs, six hits and struck out 12 batters. Bahl walked six batters, including three at the bottom of the seventh, to aid two runs.
She crushed a home run on Friday to get NU on the board. She hit a 2-RBI homer to left field to tie the game two 2-2 in the third inning.
After throwing 133 pitches on Friday, Bahl took over for Hannah Camenzind after 2 1/3 innings on Saturday. Camenzind allowed six hits, five runs and struck out three batters.
Bahl allowed four hits, six runs and walked two batters in the third inning. She was pulled after two outs. The All-American wasn’t quite ready to go again. Emmerson Cope took over with two outs in the third and quickly got the third out. Ohio State scored 11 runs in the bottom of the third.
Bahl has been really good this season but not up to the All-American level she showed at Oklahoma. The redshirt junior has a 1.81 ERA in 2025 after a 0.99 career ERA at OU over 288 2/3 innings pitched.
Pitchers are Huskers’ greatest strength and weakness
Bahl is one of the greatest pitchers in college softball. However, as established, she needs more assistance from her teammates, especially her fellow pitchers.
H. Camenzind has settled into the Huskers’ second-best pitcher position. She had her best outing in the Big Red Spring Fling but only provided Nebraska seven outs on Saturday. The junior replaced Caitlin Olensky on Sunday. Camenzind allowed five hits, three runs and struck out three batters in three innings.

Outside of Bahl and H. Camenzind, the Huskers’ pitching staff is an extreme concern. Cope threw two scoreless innings on Saturday but gave up the two winning runs in the bottom of the sixth. She threw 1 1/3 innings on Sunday and allowed four hits and four runs.
Nebraska Women’s Roundup: Basketball Bracketology, Britt Prince heating up
Kylee Magee and Cailtin Olensky pitched one inning and 2/3 innings on Sunday. Magee started but gave up three hits, four runs, walked two and hit a batter in one inning.
The entire Husker bullpen has struggled with walks this season. They walked 20 Buckeye batters over three games as a staff. They have walked 59 and hit 14 batters in 2025.
Nebraska needs more from Camenzind and the rest of the bullpen. Bahl will do everything she can to help this team win, but she could overdo it and risk injury.
Nebraska surpasses 2024 home run total
The Huskers have 62 home runs in the 2025 season. They surpassed their home run total from the 2024 season in 25 fewer games. Nebraska’s season-high home run record is 76, which was set in 2022, behind a 20-home run season from Billie Andrews. NU is on track to smash the previous record.
Nebraska hit nine home runs in the three-game series vs. Ohio State. They crushed three homers on Friday and four in Saturday’s game. Olivia DiNardo and Ava Bredwell added dingers on Sunday’s finale. Bredwell, Bahl and Cope had two home runs each in Columbus.
Ava Kuszak leads Nebraska with 12 home runs despite not hitting a homer in eight games. Bahl is close behind with 11 home runs. Abbie Squier adds seven homers. 14 Huskers have hit a home run this season.
As of March 14, the Huskers ranked second nationally with 53 home runs. Florida had 58 homers before the weekend.
