Nebraska softball falls to No. 15 Duke 3-0 in extra innings

No. 15 Duke (8-3) scored three runs in the eighth inning to defeat No. 14 Nebraska softball (9-3) 3-0 in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, Calif.
Jordy Bahl did everything possible to lead the Huskers to victory. She threw 10 strikeouts and didn’t allow a hit until the eighth inning. She gave up two hits and three runs in the eighth as her defense struggled. The redshirt junior recorded two of Nebraska’s five hits with a triple and a double.
Duke left-handed pitcher Cassidy Curd allowed five hits and no runs in a complete game. She recorded nine strikeouts.
Nebraska had many chances to score but did not capitalize. They went 0-for-14 with runners on base.
The Huskers are now 1-2 in the classic. They defeated Baylor 4-1 and were run-ruled by No. 4 UCLA 9-1 in six innings on Thursday.

Pitching battle
Bahl and Curd didn’t allow a run until the eighth inning.
Bahl recorded the first two hits of the game. She crushed a triple to right field in the bottom of the first. She was called out at home after Sammie Bland hit a fly ball to center. The redshirt junior notched a double to right center in the bottom of the fourth. Her teammates could not get her home.
In the circle, Bahl retired 17 batters in a row. D’Auna Jennings ended the streak in the top of the sixth. She drew a two-out walk, just as she did to start the game. Ana Gold flied out for the third out and left Jennings on base.
Lauren Camenzind and Abbie Squier hit lead-off singles in the fifth and sixth innings. Camenzind moved to third after a throwing error but was left on third. Squier advanced to second base on a wild pitch, but Curd struck out three straight Huskers to end the inning.

Nebraska softball split the first day of the Mary Nutter Classic
L. Camenzind hit another single to get on base in the bottom of the seventh. But again, Nebraska could not capitalize. The Huskers and Blue Devils went into extra innings, meaning a runner was played on second to start the inning.
Duke scored three in the top of the eighth. With two outs, Gabriella Mike, the runner placed in second, scored after Brooklinn Thomas hit a ball to shortstop, and the throw to home was late. Gold hit a 2-run single. Thessa Malau’ulu was tagged out at home for the third out.
L. Camenzind started the bottom of the eighth on second for the Huskers. She moved to third on a wild pitch but was stranded.

The Huskers take on San Jose State and Howard in a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 22. Nebraska vs. SJSU is at 7:30 p.m. CT. NU faces Howard at 10 p.m. on Saturday.
