Nebraska softball split first day of Mary Nutter Classic

No. 14 Nebraska softball (9-3) went 1-1 on its first day of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, Calif. The Huskers defeated Baylor (7-5) 4-1 in its first game of the doubleheader. UCLA (10-1) run ruled Nebraska 9-1 in six innings in the nightcap. The loss does not count toward the teams’ Big Ten Conference records.

Right-handed pitcher Jordy Bahl threw a complete game vs. Baylor. She allowed one run, two hits and struck out nine batters. Left-handed pitcher Hannah Camenzind got the nod vs. UCLA. She allowed two runs, one hit, two walks and recorded two strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings.

Hannah Camenzind led Nebraska with two RBI and went 3-of-5 at-bat on Friday. She recorded one of Nebraska’s three hits vs. UCLA.

Shortstop Ava Kuszak was in concussion protocol and did not play against Baylor or UCLA. Nebraska hopes she will return to the lineup on Friday. Lauren Camenzind moved from second base to shortstop. Natalia Hill started at second vs. Baylor, Katelyn Canada started at second against the Bruins. Kuszak leads the country with eight home runs.

Huskers take down Baylor 4-1

Bahl pitched a complete game vs. Baylor. She allowed one run, two hits and struck out nine batters. Lillie Walker pitched 5 1/3 innings for the Bears. She allowed six hits, two runs and struck out one batter.

Bella Bacon put the Huskers on the board with a two-out home run in the top of the second. They held a 1-0 lead until the fourth inning. Hannah Camenzind hit a single to left center to help Ava Bredwell score in the top of the fourth. Bredwell singled to get on base and then moved to third after Kacie Hoffmann‘s hit forced a fielding error by the Bears.

Baylor loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth. A fielding error by Lauren Camenzind, a walk and a single loaded the bases with no outs. Bahl struck out three straight batters to keep the Bears off the board.

The Huskers scored two in the top of the sixth inning. Hannah Camenzind (single up the middle) and Abbie Squier (sacrifice fly) added one RBI each.

Baylor scored in the bottom of the seventh. Waddell reached on a throwing error by L. Camenzind. She advanced to third and scored on two wild pitches.

UCLA run-rules Huskers

Hannah Camenzind started in the circle for the Huskers vs. the Bruins. The junior transfer from Arkansas allowed two runs, one hit, two walks and recorded two strikeouts. Right-handed pitcher Taylor Tinsley got the ball first for UCLA. The 2024 All-Pac-12 First Team pick allowed one run, three hits and had eight strikeouts. Tinsley recorded her first four walks of the season.

The Bruins struck first with a triple from shortstop Aleena Garcia with second baseman Seneca Curo on base after being walked. They went up 1-0 in the bottom of the second. Nebraska softball tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third inning. Abbie Squier, who was walked, scored off a sacrifice fly by Sammie Bland.

Kylee Magee replaced H. Camenzind in the bottom of the fourth with runners on the corners. Curo hit a sacrifice fly for Rylee Pinedo to score and the Bruins to take a 2-1 lead.

Magee continued to struggle, as she has all season. The sophomore Arizona State transfer hit a batter (Maggie Daniel) and walked one (Rylee Slimp) in the bottom of the fifth. UCLA scored after Savannah Pola knocked a double and Jessica Clements hit a 2-RBI single. They took a 4-1 lead after five innings.

The Huskers left eight on base and had several runners in position to score but didn’t capitalize.

UCLA broke open the game with five runs in the bottom of the sixth to hand Nebraska their first run-rule of the season. Garcia, Slimp and Woolery hit doubles. Emmerson Cope pitched 1/3 inning and gave up three runs on three hits.
