Nebraska tops No. 22 Kansas 7-5 in Lawrence

Nebraska baseball (15-18, 4-8 Big Ten) picked up a quality road win Tuesday night, defeating No. 22 Kansas (27-7, 9-3 Big 12) 7-5 at Hoglund Ballpark.
The Huskers came out hot, controlling much of the first five innings and taking a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth. That’s when the Jayhawks answered, striking against lefty Jalen Worthley. Brady Ballinger delivered an RBI double with one out, and Jackson Hauge followed with a two-run homer to center field — into the wind — to tie the game at 4-4.

Neither team scored in the sixth or seventh, but the Huskers came up clutch in the top of the eighth. After a walk by Riley Silva and a single from Cayden Brumbaugh, Nebraska delivered back-to-back two-out RBI hits. Max Buettenback knocked in his third run of the game with his third hit, and Cael Frost followed with another RBI single to give the Big Red a 6-4 lead.
Drew Christo shut the door in the bottom of the eighth with a 1-2-3 frame. Nebraska tacked on another insurance run in the ninth with more two-out hitting. Case Sanderson walked, Silva moved him over with a sacrifice bunt, and Brumbaugh singled him in to make it 7-4.
Kansas added one run in the bottom of the ninth, but closer Luke Broderick recorded a strikeout to end it and secure the win.

Clutch hitting lifts Huskers
Nebraska totaled just eight hits but made them count, going 6-for-15 with runners on base (.400) and 4-for-13 with two outs (.308). Buettenback continued his torrid stretch at the plate, finishing 3-for-5 with three RBIs, including two extra-base hits down the right-field line. Brumbaugh added two hits and an RBI.
Despite most of the lineup being held in check, Nebraska manufactured offense through timely hitting and smart baserunning.
The Huskers improved to 4-2 this season against ranked opponents and now turn their focus to a pivotal Big Ten road series this weekend at Iowa. Nebraska is currently in a two-way tie for 12th in the conference standings, with the top 12 qualifying for the Big Ten Tournament in Omaha.
Iowa (12-3 in Big Ten play) sits in second place. With the Huskers using a “Johnny Wholestaff” approach Tuesday, the pitching staff should be well-rested heading into the weekend series.
