Isaac Gifford, Bryce Benhart announce their return to Nebraska next season

On a day headlined by recruiting and transfer portal news, Nebraska landed two significant players already on this season’s roster.

Safety Isaac Gifford and right tackle Bryce Benhart announced in a social media video on Monday night that they will return to the Huskers in 2024.

Both Gifford and Benhart have played four seasons in Lincoln but had the option of an additional COVID year.

Gifford emerged as a fixture in Nebraska’s secondary this season, starting all 12 games and leading the defense with a career-high 86 tackles. The Lincoln native became the first Husker defensive back to post 80 tackles since Nathan Gerry in 2014.

The honorable-mention All-Big Ten selection also ranked second on the team with a career-high eight pass breakups. He set a career-high with 6.5 tackles for loss and one interception. 

The 6-foot-9, 315-pound Benhart started all 12 games at right tackle for NU this season and earned honorable-mention All-Big Ten honors. His 41 career starts, all at right tackle, tied Jeremiah Sirles for the most ever by a Husker offensive lineman.

After struggling mightily in 2022, Benhart’ became arguably the most improved player on NU’s o-line. He helped Nebraska rank second in the Big Ten in rushing.
