Nebraska Women’s Basketball cruises past Rutgers 84-60 in Big Ten Tournament

No. 10 Nebraska Women’s Basketball (20-10, 11-8) crushed No. 15 Rutgers (11-19, 3-16) 84-60 in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament. 3-pointers and Alexis Markowski led the Huskers to a conference tournament win in Indianapolis, Ind.
The Huskers advance to the second round to face No. 7 Illinois (21-8, 11-7) on Thursday, March 6 at 5:30 p.m. CT at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
Nebraska shot 55% from field-goal range and 42% from three. The Huskers went 13-of-31 from behind the arc. Eight different players made a 3-pointer.
Markowski paced the Huskers with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Alberte Rimdal (12), Britt Prince (10) and Amiah Hargrove (13) scored in double digits. Rimdal led NU with eight assists and Prince added five assists. Nebraska had 26 assists.

Destiny Adams led the Scarlet Knights with a double-double of 25 points and 10 rebounds. She scored 19 points in the second half.

Huskers dominate early with 3-point shooting
The Huskers scored the first six points of the game. Adams was the first Scarlet Knight to score with 6:19 left in the first quarter.
NU cooled off as Rutgers went on a 7-0 run and Nebraska didn’t score for three minutes. Rimdal ended the run with a 3-pointer. Prince and Markowski drained back-to-back threes soon after to go up 17-11 with under two left in the first.
Nebraska scored 11 straight points with three 3-pointers over two minutes. Maya Petticord hit a mid-range jumper at the buzzer. Nebraska led 22-13 after one quarter.
Both teams struggled offensively to start the second quarter. Logan Nissley was the first to score a basket after making a three with 6:27 left in the half. Rutgers went scoreless until Lisa Thompson hit a fastbreak jumper with 5:32 remaining.
Nebraska swished four 3-pointers in the first and second quarters. They took a big lead in the first and kept it in the second quarter. The Huskers led 39-24 after the first quarter.
Rutgers and Nebraska tied with 20 rebounds each after the first half. But the Scarlet Knights led NU with eight offensive rebounds and eight second-chance points. The Huskers secured two offensive rebounds in the first half.

Huskers Surge Ahead with Explosive Runs and Dominant Rebounding
Nebraska’s first bucket of the third quarter was when Nissley drained a three. Callin Hake stole the ball and found Prince at the top of the key for another three. The Huskers scored six points in 12 seconds.
After a Rutgers timeout, Petticord made a 3-pointer for the Knights. She led RU from three, going 3-of-6 for 11 points.
Petra Bozan scored back-to-back buckets off an inbound under the basket and a perfectly executed pick-and-roll with Prince. She added nine points and three rebounds.
The Huskers went on an 8-0 run to go up 61-37 after the third quarter. They extended the run as Hargrove banked in a layup and completed the and-one shot.
Awa Sidibe scored for Rutgers on the other end but Hargrove backed it up with another layup. The Scarlet Knights made three straight layups to cut Nebraska’s lead to 66-46. The Huskers responded with a 5-0 run.
Nebraska outrebounded Rutgers 19-10 in the second quarter and won the battle 39-30.
Adams scored 19 points in the second half and went 13-of-13 from the free-throw line.

No. 10 Nebraska battles No. 7 Illinois on March 6 at 5:30 p.m. in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament. The Fighting Illini defeated Nebraska 77-68 in Champaign, Ill., on Feb. 16. It was a hard-fought game that the Huskers believed they should have won.
Markowski led NU with 28 points and eight rebounds. Adalia McKenzie paced the Illinois with 23 points and eight rebounds. Four total Illinois players scored in double digits.
