Nebraska Women’s Basketball dominates Northwestern in Big Ten regular season finale

Nebraska Women’s Basketball (19-10, 10-8) dominated Northwestern (9-18, 2-18) 98-77 at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill.

The Huskers are the No. 10 seed in the Big Ten Tournament. They face No. 15 seed Rutgers on Wednesday, March 5, at roughly 5 p.m. CT in Indianapolis, Ind., at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

Senior Alexis Markowski led Nebraska with 30 points and eight rebounds. Alberte Rimdal was on fire from behind the arc. She went 5-of-6 from three for 17 total points.

Nebraska freshman guard Britt Prince returned to the court after missing two games with a right lower leg injury. The point guard recorded 15 points, six assists and four rebounds.

The Huskers moved the ball well and had 29 assists, 13 more than Northwestern. Jessica Petrie added 11 points, eight rebounds and a team-high seven assists.

The Huskers shot 52.9 percent from field-goal range and went 10-of-22 from three. Northwestern hit 42.2 percent of the field goal attempts and was 2-of-7 from behind the arc.

Caileigh Walsh led the Wildcats with 22 points and four rebounds. Melannie Daley (15), Caroline Lau (11) and Taylor Williams (11) scored in double-digits as well.

Huskers Dominate Early with Hot Shooting, Northwestern Struggles to Keep Pace

Nebraska scored the first five points of the game. Northwestern didn’t make a field goal until 7:25 left in the first quarter.

Free throw shooting was critical for Nebraska and the Wildcats on Sunday. The Huskers went 6-of-7 from the charity strike, and Northwestern shot 6-of-10 from the free-throw line in the first quarter.

Rimdal highlighted a 10-0 Nebraska scoring run with back-to-back 3-pointers. Meanwhile, the Wildcats went scoreless for three minutes.

Markowski was dominant in the first quarter. She scored 16 points and grabbed four boards. The senior center shot 6-of-7 from the floor in the first quarter. She finished with 18 points and five rebounds in the first half.

The Huskers drained three 3-pointers early in the second quarter to go up 42-23. Petrie made two threes, and Rimdal hit her third of the game.

Nebraska went on a 7-0 run, and Northwestern responded with six straight points to cut the Huskers lead to 55-38 at the half.

Nebraska builds on lead

Both offenses cooled off in the third quarter and shot under 40 percent in the quarter.

Nebraska didn’t score a field goal for four minutes. Prince hit two free throws to end the scoring drought. Rimdal scored the Huskers’ first field goal with a 3-pointer with 2:32 left in the third.

Northwestern scored the final six points of the third quarter. The quarter was evenly matched as Nebraska scored 18, and the Wildcats added 17.

Markowski started the fourth with two jumpers in the paint. Rimdal continued to shoot and make 3-pointers. She hit one with 7:14 left to give Nebraska an 82-63 advantage. The Huskers went on a 10-2 run to take a 92-67 lead.

Northwestern scored 10 points in the final 3:14 of the game, making eight free throws. Nebraska recorded 11 points and 10 assists in the fourth quarter. Petrie recorded five assists in the final quarter.
