Nebraska Women’s Basketball (21-11, 10-8) is a No. 10 seed in the 2025 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. The Huskers advance to its second straight NCAA Tournament and third in four years. In 2024, NU won a first-round game for the first time since 2014.

The Huskers will face No. 7 Louisville (21-10) in the first round on Friday, March 21, at 5 p.m. Nebraska vs. the Cardinals will be in Fort Worth, Texas, in the Birmingham 3 Region. The winner will face the victor of No. 2 TCU vs. No. 15 Fairleigh Dickenson.

The four No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament are UCLA, South Carolina, USC and Texas. The top four seeds in the Huskers’ quarter of the bracket are No. 1 Texas, No. 2 TCU, No. 3 Notre Dame and No. 4 Ohio State. A record 12 Big Ten teams are dancing in 2025.

An opponent with a connection

Louisville leads the series with Nebraska 3-1. The last time they played was in the 2018-19 season. The Cardinals won the NCAA Tournament game 85-68 in Louisville, Ky. The series has never been played in Lincoln, Neb.

Louisville head coach Jeff Walz was an assistant coach at Nebraska from 1997-2001. He coached Nebraska head coach Amy Williams when she was a student-athlete at Nebraska.

“It’ll interesting to be able to go up against my former college coach,” Williams said on Sunday. “We have a lot of respect for their program. We played at Louisville a few years back in the NCAA Tournament. Alexis (Markowski’s) freshman year I think. We are familiar with their program, have a lot of respect for their team and we know it’s going to be a tough battle this time of year.”

Building on the Big Ten Tournament

The Huskers’ three games in the Big Ten Tournament will help prepare them for the NCAA Tournament. Freshmen like Britt Prince were able to get experience in postseason college basketball.

“I think that was really important,” Prince said on Sunday. “It was really fun to be able to play a lot of good teams, even throughout the regular season with the Big Ten. Playing those back-to-back days with not a lot of time to prepare gives us a bit of a tournament feel.”

Nebraska is coming off two wins in the Big Ten Tournament at Gainbride Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind. They crushed No. 15 Rutgers 84-60 and defeated No. 7 Illinois 74-70. The No. 10 seed Huskers fell to No. 2 UCLA 85-74 in the quarterfinals. The Bruins went on to beat USC in the championship.

“We learned that we can find ways to keep getting better,” Williams said. “The way that we competed, even in our loss against UCLA, was way, way more competitive than when we played UCLA in December. This team is confident knowing that we’re a different team right now.

“Our goal has always been to be crescendoing towards the end and playing our best basketball heading into March. The Big Ten Tournament showed us that we are doing that.”
