Nebraska WR coach Garret McGuire leaving NU for Texas Tech
A third member of Matt Rhule’s 2024 coaching staff is moving on. Wide receivers coach Garret McGuire will join his father Joey McGuire’s staff at Texas Tech.
Football Scoop first reported the news on Thursday, and a University of Nebraska program source confirmed that McGuire was no longer on staff in Lincoln.

McGuire coached during Thursday morning’s bowl practice before informing NU officials he was moving on from his position.
This comes 24 hours after Rhule announced the hiring of Daikiel Shorts from Kentucky to join Dana Holgorsen’s offensive staff as a wide receivers coach.
At that time, Rhule said there was a place for Shorts and McGuire on the staff to split the wide receiver coaching duties.
“In Dana’s offense, they’ve always had an inside and outside receivers coach,” Rhuel said.. “That was Dana’s only request. After four weeks, he said, “Matt, I love the entire staff. I like working with Glenn (Thomas), I like working with (Marcus Satterfield), I like working with (Donovan Raiola), I like working with EJ (Barthel).

“But I do want to bring in my guy that I trust and believe in. He’s one of the best recruiters. A great, great coach, who knows our system, so we made that happen, and then we’ll see what happens as a result.”
Shorts will coach for NU in the bowl game
It was already determined that Shorts would join Nebraska’s staff immediately and coach the upcoming bowl game later this month.
McGuire was also set to coach with him until this afternoon.
Rhule still needs to find a new defensive coordinator and a defensive line coach. With the NCAA’s new unlimited coaching rules, roles are more undefined.
Before this season, college teams were allowed 10 full-time on-field coaches. Now, rules allow unlimited paid on-field coaches, which gives the head coach a lot more flexibility on making hires.
