Nebraska's 2023 Red-White spring game has been set for April 22, and more from AD Trev Alberts
Mark your calendars. Nebraska’s 2023 Red-White spring game has been set for April 22.
Husker Athletic Director Trev Alberts made the announcement on Tuesday night during his monthly radio show.
“We are assuming it’s going to be at 1 o’clock,” Albert said. “Obviously we are going to work with the Big Ten Network. We wanted to make sure folks could get that on their calendar.”
There will be a lot of anticipation for the 2023 spring game, as it will be the official introduction of Matt Rhule and his coaching staff to Nebraska fans.
With an April 22 Red-White Game, spring ball will likely start on the week of March 20.
The University of Nebraska is on spring break from March 12-19. That would give Rhule five weeks to get in 15 spring practices.
Alberts shares more on the Matt Rhule “official visit” weekend
When Rhule was hired, we learned that Alberts snuck him and his wife Julie in for a secret visit during the weekend of the Illinois game.
That was Alberts’s idea, as he knew if he got him here, it would sell Nebraska at its best. Alberts shared more of that story on Tuesday.
“I kind of took this approach a little bit like the recruiting process of a student-athlete,” Alberts said. “When you think about official visits, generally, if you can be the first official visit or the last, you’ve got the best chance of getting them to commit. I wanted to be the first.
“I also knew there was a family vacation involved with Matt and Julie, and they were going to go out of the country. I wanted to get them here to Lincoln because I always believed, and I wanted to continue to believe that whether it’s a student-athlete, a coach, or staff, we want to acquire great talent here. It’s wonderful to look at pictures, it’s wonderful to do things via Zoom, but if you get them here, people are blown away by our state. They are blown away by Lincoln. They are blown away by the investment of our community and our fan base and what our facilities look like.”
Alberts added that Rhule’s agent Trace Armstrong also came on the visit to Lincoln in October.
“Matt’s agent came and wanted to see the facilities and walk around,” Alberts said. “The common theme was there is a standard here. There’s an expectation here.”
Odds and ends
*** The reception Rhule has gotten on the road recruiting has been outstanding.
“One of the things that has been really amazing being out on the road recruiting is just how well respected Nebraska is,” Alberts said Rhule told him. “That’s been something that’s been really encouraging to him.”
***Some schools shy away from pushing NIL. Alberts said Nebraska is all-in on supporting it and being a leader in the space.

“At the University of Nebraska we intend on being leaders at everything,” Alberts said. “So whatever college athletics throws our way, we are first going to define the challenge, look at the opportunity, and then we’ll work collaboratively to try to be one of the best at it. Not only are we interested in (NIL), we are going to participate in it at a high level and do it the right way.
“Certainly it’s not the end all, be all, but it’s an important tool that we need to consider, along with everything else. So, we are really interested in it.”
***Look for a special book to be released to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Memorial Stadium. Alberts added there might also be special throwback uniforms for the 100th anniversary.
NU also announced on Tuesday that season ticket prices would drop by $100 next season in honor of the milestone.
***Alberts confirmed that they are moving forward with converting the original east stadium balcony into club seating with chairbacks that would mirror the west club. This will eliminate a little over 600 existing seats.
“This is going to affect a lot of folks. We are going to have the seat licensing requirements — the same as the west side,” Alberts said.
“Everyone will have the option to stay in the east balcony, just the pricing structure will look a little different.”
Currently, those seats are priced at a donation level of $750 to $1,500 per seat. They will jump to $1,500 to $2,500 per seat based on the latest donor ticket map.
