QB Jalyn Gramstad, NAIA player of year, works out at Nebraska camp
You never know who might show up to a post-graduate football camp. Monday, Nebraska received a pleasant surprise.
Quarterback Jalyn Gramstad, the reigning NAIA football player of the year, worked out at NU’s post-graduate football camp inside the Hawks Indoor Center.
The 6-foot, 190-pound Gramstad has played at NAIA power Northwestern in Iowa for the last four seasons. He led the Raiders to a national runner-up finish this past season, falling to Keiser (Fla.) in the championship game. In 2022, Northwestern won the NAIA national championship with Gramstad under center. He threw for 247 yards and three touchdowns, ran for 156 yards, and scored on the ground.
Gramstad threw for an NAIA-best 3,681 yards and 35 touchdowns in his first full season as a starter. He completed 67.8 percent of his passes and threw just nine interceptions over 15 games.
He also ran 182 times for 772 yards (4.2 ypc) and eight touchdowns. Over his career, Gramstad has 6,237 yards passing and 60 touchdowns, with 1,822 yards rushing and 30 scores on the ground. He’s been voted a three-time captain at Northwestern.
Gramstad’s appearance at the camp surprised Northwestern’s conference rival, Midland University in Fremont, which had multiple coaches working the camp.
Once the Husker staff became aware of Gramstad’s situation, more eyes started to move toward him. Freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola was also present during the workout.
Gramstad slipped while running his 40-yard dash, so it did not appear he ran his best time there. However, Gramstad demonstrated elite arm talent, which should not be surprising considering his previous accomplishments.

Gramstad has one season of eligibility remaining along with a redshirt season — meaning he could play in up to four games this season. He began his career in 2020 and has seen time in the last three seasons for the Raiders. In 2022, he was named second-team all-conference at quarterback.
After the camp, Gramstad was seen walking back into the weight room area with the Husker coaching staff.
Around 30 to 40 athletes took part in Nebraska’s post-graduate camp.
Nebraska has a QB need on the roster
Nebraska’s quarterback numbers are light right now, with just three scholarship players in the room.
With last year’s returning starter, Heinrich Haarberg, along with Raiola and freshman Daniel Kaelin, it was a tough sell to find a transfer portal quarterback who would fit the Huskers’ needs.
Gramstad could end up being that guy. He’s highly experienced and accomplished all you can at the NAIA level, and now it appears he wants a shot at the highest level.
If they pull it off, this could end up being a homerun addition to the Nebraska roster.
One small college coach in attendance at the event told HuskerOnline that Gramstad was better than anyone the Huskers had on the field a year ago. That conversation has changed quite a bit now that Raiola is on campus, but there still remains a need for another quality player in the QB room.
