BELTON, Texas — One of the bigger recruiting storylines to emerge from Monday’s Nebraska Satellite Camp at Mary Hardin-Baylor was defensive back Malik Esquerra.

The 6-foot-3, 187-pound Esquerra did not participate in the camp but instead came to watch the Husker coaching staff in action.

He officially visited Oregon State this past weekend and will be at Texas Tech on June 16. He was scheduled to be on an official visit to Lincoln this weekend, but his family could not make it. His sister is getting married on June 26, so that weekend is also not an option. The plan is to set up a midweek visit sometime this week or next.

“Last night, I was on my way back from Oregon State and Coach (Garret) McGuire hit me up and told me that they were going to be out here (at the Mary Hardin-Baylor camp) from 10 to 4 and told me I should come out and check their coaching staff out,” Esquerra said. “That was pretty much the reason I came. I also wanted to come out and check out Coach (Evan) Cooper. I’ve heard a lot of good things about him; I also wanted to get into contact with him too.”

Esquerra currently has Power Five offers from NU, Texas Tech, Oregon State, Vanderbilt and Oklahoma State.

He’s a standout track athlete in the hurdles, with personal-record times of 14.37 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles and 38.6 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles. However, he fell short of qualifying for the state 5A meet due to a bad break at districts.

“I was third in the 300 hurdles and fourth in the 110 hurdles,” Esquerra said. “During the 110 hurdle race, one of the hurdles came into my lane and messed up my lane, so I went from second to fourth. If I would’ve got second, I would’ve gone to state in the event.”

As for his recruiting timeline, Esquerra does not plan to decide this summer. Ideally, he would like to take a few trips during the season.

“I’m thinking by the end of the summer to have my top three or four, but I probably won’t be committing anywhere in the summer,” Esquerra said. “The other teams that are intriguing me the most right now are Vanderbilt and I’m also talking to Oklahoma State. Everyone is recruiting me as a safety.

Nebraska offers 2025 Temple WR Christian Tutson

Another storyline that emerged from the Mary Hardin-Baylor Satellite Camp was 2025 Temple (Texas) wide receiver Christian Tutson.

The 6-foot, 165-pound Tutson clearly caught the eye of McGuire at the camp.

Following the camp, McGuire offered Tutson.

As a sophomore, Tutson was also a standout track athlete with a PR of 22-6 1/2 in the long jump.

Quick hits

***Another prospect the Husker coaching staff stopped and worked out more after the camp was Plano (Texas) Prestonwood Christian edge Nathan Laperi. The 6-foot-3, 230-pound player did additional drill work for defensive coordinator Tony White and defensive line coach Terrance Knighton.

***Tight ends coach Bob Wager was back in his element back in the state of Texas. The former Arlington Martin head coach had several players and parents at the camp who approached him to talk as things concluded on Monday.

***Monday’s camp was divided into two sessions: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Husker coaches immediately left Belton via private plane to Houston to host a coaches clinic at 7:30 p.m. in their hotel. Tuesday’s camp with Houston Christian kicks off at 4 p.m.
