One of the most polarizing names during the first week of Nebraska’s latest football head coaching search had been former Ohio State legend and current FOX Sports analyst Urban Meyer.

Rumors heated up more than ever this weekend when Meyer was in Lincoln with FOX’s “Big Noon Saturday” pregame show for the Huskers’ home game vs. Oklahoma.

But according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, NU fans can scratch Meyer’s name off of their wish list to be the program’s next head coach.

This is coming off quite the scene on Saturday morning, as Nebraska fans were chanting, “We want Urban!” during the pregame show. Comedian Larry The Cable Guy was a guest on the show and said to Meyer on air: “I’ve come with an open check.”

CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd even reported on Saturday night that Nebraska had “contacted” Urban Meyer about the job, though it was not directly about his interest in the position.

“It was not made clear whether Meyer was asked about his interest in holding the job,” Dodd wrote.

NU athletic director Trev Alberts said during his press conference last week that he planned to reach out to several people during his coaching search but stressed that contacting someone would not necessarily mean he was offering the job.

“You’re going to hear about a lot of names, and that’s good,” Alberts said. “That means we’re going to talk to a lot of people… We’re also not going to try to win the press conference. At the end of the day, we need to hire the right leader and the right fit.”
