Nebraska gains some clarity on Ahron Ulis with latest NCAA sports gambling guidelines
The ongoing questions surrounding Nebraska guard Ahron Ulis’s future this season and beyond finally got some clarity on Wednesday.
The Division I Council Coordination Committee released its adjusted guidelines regarding reinstatement for student-athletes involved in sports gambling cases.
The news directly pertained to Ulis, who was charged with underage gambling by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation back in August.
“Effective immediately, reinstatement guidelines for student-athletes who wager on teams at their school — excluding their own team — will start at requiring one season of ineligibility and a loss of one year of eligibility…” the DI council stated in a press release.
“Previous guidelines, as approved in June, prescribed permanent ineligibility for those cases. The adjusted guidelines may be applied to cases in which student-athletes are currently serving suspensions related to wagering on a different team at their own school that were reported on or after May 2, 2023.”

According to a criminal complaint, Ulis allegedly played roughly 1,850 bets with total wagers eclipsing $34,800 – approximately $18 per bet. The junior allegedly placed more than 740 while he was under 21 years old, the legal betting age in Iowa.
The most significant issue was that the point guard allegedly placed at least one bet on an Iowa sporting event. The investigation also charged that over 430 were on NCAA-sanctioned football and basketball games.
Ulis pled guilty to a lesser underage gambling charge in September, agreeing to pay a $645 fine.
A junior, Ulis would still have another season of eligibility at Nebraska in 2024-25. He remains with the program and has practiced with the team throughout the offseason.
However, Ulis did not play in any of the Huskers’ three games in Spain, the exhibition vs. Doane, or Monday night’s regular-season opener vs. Lindenwood.
