Notre Dame landed a verbal commitment following Saturday night’s game against Ohio State. 2025 four-star EDGE C.J. May announced a surprise pledge to the Fighting Irish.

After visiting Notre Dame on June 12, the 6-foot-4, 225-pound May returned to campus for a second unofficial college recruiting visit Saturday. He was one of several Irish recruiting targets in South Bend for their marquee matchup against Ohio State.

May, a product of Highland Home (Ala.) High, chose the Irish over Auburn, Clemson, Georgia and others. He cited his relationship with Lucedale (Miss.) George County four-star quarterback Deuce Knight was a key reason to shut down his recruitment. Knight committed to Notre Dame last Monday.

“My future teammate Deuce Knight really made me think about it & the love I get from the program is incomparable to others,” May told On3’s Hayes Fawcett.

The On3 Industry Ranking — a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all four primary recruiting media services — considers May the No. 232 overall player, No. 19 EDGE and No. 14 prospect in Alabama, according to the On3 Industry Ranking.

In On3’s own rankings, May is the No. 242 overall player, No. 21 EDGE and No. 13 prospect in Alabama. His On3 Industry Ranking rating (90.20) is slightly higher than his On3 rating (89).

May reported 18 full-ride scholarship offers, including 15 from Power Five programs. In early August, he narrowed his recruitment to a top 10 of Notre Dame, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Louisville, Miami (Fla.), Ole Miss, South Carolina, Tennessee and Troy.

“Even though it’s very far away from home for me, being up there makes me feel like I have a second home,” May told Blue & Gold on Aug. 7. “Notre Dame can obviously offer a lot of things … all the way from the education too, like for some people, the Catholic school may also mean a lot to them.”

Notre Dame’s 2025 recruiting class has five verbal commits

May is the second recruit to commit to Notre Dame on Saturday. Earlier in the day, 2025 three-star running back Daniel Anderson chose the Irish over Colorado, Mississippi State, Tennessee and others.

The 5-11, 190-pound Anderson attends Bryant (Ark.) High. He is the No. 417 overall player, No. 38 running back and No. 4 prospect in Arkansas, according to the On3 Industry Ranking.

The Irish 2025 recruiting class is up to five verbal commitments. Besides Knight’s commitment last Monday, four-star running back Justin Thurman and three-star defensive lineman Davion Dixon previously pledged to the Irish.

The 6-foot, 180-pound Thurman committed on Aug. 1, two days after the program’s “grill & chill” recruiting event. The Tampa (Fla.) Jesuit product is the No. 260 overall player, No. 23 running back and No. 39 prospect in Florida.

Fellow Florida recruit, Dixon, committed to Notre Dame on April 21, the day before the Blue-Gold Game. Dixon attends Miami Palmetto High and is the No. 371 overall player, No. 39 defensive lineman and No. 56 prospect in Florida.
