Ready for a ride: Why the BlueandGold.com move to On3 is great for Notre Dame fans
There’s something different about this place.
I felt it in my first interview. I felt it in the second. I’ve felt it every day since starting to work here six months ago. The product put forth by the tremendous staff at BlueandGold.com is second to none in the Notre Dame market, and it’s only going to get better with today’s news we have joined On3.
Blue & Gold publisher Stu Coman described this move to me several months ago as strapping into a rocket ship. That was before I had even been formally offered my current position. Where’s it going? I’m not quite sure. Scary and a bit dangerous? Perhaps. But that’s not the point. There’s not a clear destination because setting it for the moon or the stars would discredit what we’re trying to do here.
Seven words sitting at the top of every edition of our Blue & Gold Illustrated magazine say it all: “America’s foremost authority on Notre Dame football.” That’s what Blue & Gold has always been, and we’re determined to reinforce that mantra even further within the On3 network. Why stop at the moon? Why settle for the stars? Let’s just keep this rocket ship moving.
How appropriate is it that a new era of Notre Dame football has concurrently aligned with a new era of Blue & Gold? Very. And the comparisons are uncanny.
The Fighting Irish are over the moon (again, not settling to stop on it) about the possibilities of the program under newly-named head coach Marcus Freeman. Blue & Gold is incredibly ecstatic about teaming up with sports media and fan site wizard Shannon Terry. He might as well be our Freeman. Everything he touches turns to gold. Pun intended? Absolutely.

Terry’s vision for what On3 will be is exciting. He’s set on changing the sports media landscape for the better, and it’s humbling and energizing for me to be able to say I’ll be a small part of that at Blue & Gold. Our work isn’t going to change a whole lot. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Rather, just enhance it. That’s been one of Freeman’s buzzwords in the early days of his tenure. The national assets at On3 are great complements and enhancements for what we do at Blue & Gold.
The only thing missing? Lou Somogyi. Terry would not have made this publication a part of his plan without the work Somogyi did as a Notre Dame beat writer at Blue & Gold for decades. If you’re reading this, odds are you know the name. And if you don’t, go back and look it up. Read his stuff. There’s a reason our message board is named after him.
It’s not fair Somogyi tragically passed in April before seeing this transition through, but what better motivation for myself, fellow beat writer Patrick Engel and recruiting reporter Mike Singer than to make sure we keep this rocket ship moving in his honor?
Somogyi is along for the ride in spirit. The least readers can do is hop on with him.
