Class of 2024 power forward Garrett Sundra commits to Notre Dame
Fairfax (Va.) Paul VI power forward Garrett Sundra committed to Notre Dame, he announced on the social media platform ”X” on Thursday.
Sundra, the No. 166 player and No. 33 power forward in the 2024 On3 Industry Ranking, chose the Irish over Butler, Miami, Providence and Virginia Tech. He visited Notre Dame for a second time this past weekend, the first coming Jan. 26.
The 6-foot-10, 215-pound power forward received an offer from Notre Dame on April 24. On3 itself is higher on Sundra than the industry, ranking him as the No. 123 player and No. 25 power forward in the nation.
“[Notre Dame] coach [Micah] Shrewsberry had a great year last year at Penn State,” Sundra told On3 national recruiting expert Joe Tipton. “I think he lets his guys play very freely. Coach Shrewsberry likes to shoot a lot of threes which is the way I like to play. I’m excited to get out to campus and check it out this summer. I also like the way Coach Shrewsberry treats his players off the court.”
Sundra joins Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy shooting guard Cole Certa in Shrewsberry’s second recruiting class at Notre Dame. Certa, known as a prolific three-point shooter, is the No. 185 player and No. 38 shooting guard in the On3 Industry Ranking.
Penn State was recruiting Sundra before Shrewsberry took the Notre Dame job. His recruitment picked up after his junior season, in which he broke out as a high-major prospect.

“I would say I’m a hard-nosed player,” Sundra told On3 national recruiting analyst Jamie Shaw in early March. “I bring energy, positive energy to the game. I’d say I’m a good leader and can shoot the ball well from the outside. I’m comfortable in the mid-post and play hard on the boards. I would say I am a stretch 4 that runs the floor well and is just a great hustle guy overall. I like Luke [Dončić] because he plays at a great pace. [Kevin Durant] is a tall guy who can dribble better, so I try to take some moves from him.”
Sundra fits the mold of the type of player Shrewsberry wants to recruit, with his height, length and ability to shoot 3s. He told Tipton what he wants in a destination June 20, when he named his top-five schools.
“I want to be able to have some freedom on offense, use my versatility,” Sundra told Tipton. “Nothing special, be able to catch it in the mid-post and make a read and make a play. Play some pick and pops and some ghosts here and there.”
Notre Dame opens its 2023-24 season against Niagara at 7:00 p.m. on Nov. 6 at Purcell Pavilion in South Bend.
