Former Notre Dame defensive back Jayden Bellamy’s stay in the transfer portal was a short one. He needed 11 days to find his next destination.

Bellamy committed to Syracuse Friday, he announced. He will have four years of eligibility to play for the Orange.

The 5-foot-11, 175-pound Bellamy did not play in a game for Notre Dame in 2022 and took a redshirt year. A concussion kept him out of uniform for the last several weeks of the regular season. He was a January 2022 enrollee and participated in spring practice. He entered the portal on Dec. 5, the first day undergrads from teams without a coaching change could seek a transfer.

Notre Dame signed Bellamy out of Oradell (N.J.) Bergen Catholic High School, where he was teammates with Irish freshman quarterback Steve Angeli. He was a three-star recruit and the No. 456 player in the 2022 On3 Consensus. He committed to the Irish on July 2, 2021, choosing them over Penn State. He had a top six of Clemson, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Rutgers. Syracuse offered him as a high school recruit as well.

Bellamy became the first Marcus Freeman signee to leave the program when he entered the portal. Freeman offered, recruited and landed Bellamy when he was the Irish’s defensive coordinator.

Notre Dame signed three cornerbacks in its 2022 class: Bellamy, Jaden Mickey and Benjamin Morrison. The latter two were season-long contributors as freshmen. Morrison started nine games and has a team-high 5 interceptions.

Bellamy is one of six Notre Dame players to enter the transfer portal since the start of the 2022 season. He’s the third to pick a new school, joining defensive tackle Jacob Lacey (Oklahoma) and wide receiver Joe Wilkins Jr. (Miami Ohio). Both entered the portal during the season as grad transfers.

The three other transfers – quarterback Drew Pyne, defensive end Osita Ekwonu and tight end Cane Berrong – have yet to choose new destinations. Berrong has reported offers from Western Michigan and Pittsburgh since entering the portal Dec. 12. Ekwonu entered Dec. 5 and has reported an offer from Charlotte.

Bellamy comes from an NFL family. His father, Jay, was a safety for the Seattle Seahawks from 1994-2000 and the New Orleans Saints from 2001-07.
