Former Notre Dame women's basketball guard Emma Risch commits to Florida State

Emma Risch is headed home to her native state of Florida. The former Notre Dame women’s basketball guard who spent two seasons in South Bend has officially signed with the Florida State Seminoles, the school announced Tuesday.
Risch entered the transfer portal quickly after Notre Dame’s season ended in the Sweet 16 a couple weeks back. She hadn’t played in a game in her true sophomore season since January because of a second hip injury in as many years.
Risch only played in 20 games at Notre Dame because of the nagging ailment that required two surgeries. She got to the Irish program as a five-star sharpshooter out of Melbourne (Fla.) Palm Bay Magnet. She was the Florida 4A Player of the Year there for averaging 23.3 points, 6.4 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 2.9 steals per game as a senior.
At Notre Dame, Risch averaged 5.3 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.0 assist in 13.1 minutes per game. She connected on 24 of her 57 three-point attempts for an average of 42.1 percent. She’s off to FSU with three years of eligibility remaining.
“I am thrilled to welcome Emma Risch back home to Florida and into our Seminole Family,” FSU head coach Brooke Wyckoff said in a statement. “Emma was a highly decorated high school basketball player and comes to us with two years of college basketball experience playing at the highest level. She is a talented, versatile scorer and has great size and length that will make an impact on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor.”

Notre Dame lost four players to the portal, including Risch, and so far has only replaced them with one portal addition of its own; Mayala Cowles of Wake Forest is on her way to South Bend. The news of her arrival this summer came down this past Friday. Former Notre Dame guard Olivia Miles will suit up at TCU next season. Former Irish center Kate Koval has three years left to play at LSU or whichever other university he chooses to transfer to, and fellow former center Kylee Watson has not publicly announced where she will spend her final year of eligibility.
With Cowles added to the mix, Notre Dame has five scholarship players on the 2025-26 roster. They’re led by two-time Associated Press First Team All-American guard Hannah Hidalgo. Senior guards KK Bransford and Cassandre Prosper and freshman forward Leah Macy round out the handful.
Even with her injury history, Risch would have factored into the Notre Dame lineup in some way next season considering all that was lost from head coach Niele Ivey’s fourth-straight Sweet 16 team. It’ll take a lot more success in the transfer portal to get the Irish back there for a fifth consecutive time. There are plenty players to choose from — still over 1,000 in the portal, according to On3’s Talia Goodman.
