Notre Dame won’t have to face Georgia Tech senior quarterback Haynes King when it kicks off against the Yellow Jackets on Saturday. According to a Friday report from ESPN college football senior writer, Pete Thamel, coach Brent Key’s squad will be without its starting signal-caller.

The Yellow Jackets will start junior Zach Pyron.

On Monday, Key designated Haynes’ status as “day-to-day” after not finishing last Saturday’s game against North Carolina. He played 60 snaps, completing 11-22 passes for 127 yards. He also had 11 carries for 107 yards and 2 touchdowns. However, his completion percentage (50%) and passing yardage (127) were both season lows.

King did not play most of the fourth quarter after leading a Yellow Jackets scoring drive in the final frame. They ended up beating the Tar Heels 41-34.

Notre Dame prepared to face Georgia Tech with Zach Pyron

Although Key was coy about King’s status earlier in the week, Notre Dame still prepared for the possibility of facing Pyron.

“Yeah, we went back and watched all of his clips from the past few years, and there’s quite a bit,” Irish coach Marcus Freeman told reporters on Thursday. “There’s quite a few of them. He’s doing a good job and going into some hostile environments and performing.”

Pyron has played in all seven games this season, connecting on 5-7 throws for 64 yards and 1 touchdown. He also has 17 carries for 60 yards and another 4 scores.

“I would say they use him very similar as they do with King, but he also does some things differently,” Freeman said. “So, we have a plan for both. … But again, he has the ability to run the ball and create issues for your defense with his legs, but he can throw it, too. He’s confident, and he’ll throw it in tight windows. So we have to be ready with both quarterbacks.”

The Notre Dame defense presents a tough test for any opposing quarterback.

Through six games, Al Golden’s unit ranks fifth in defensive team pass efficiency (93.74), sixth in passing yards allowed (148.7 per game), 19th in interceptions (7) and eighth in scoring defense (11.7 points per game).

The Irish will be without its top defensive back in Week 8 and for the remainder of the season. On Monday, Freeman announced junior cornerback Benjamin Morrison is out for the season with a hip injury. Freshman Leonard Moore is expected to start in his place.

Kickoff for Saturday’s game is at 3:30 p.m. ET. ESPN will have broadcast television coverage.
