Intrigue isn’t always guaranteed when Notre Dame and Navy meet for their annual rivalry game. Often times you get a blowout, like when the Fighting Irish beat up on the Midshipmen 42-3 last year.

That isn’t expected this time around.

The No. 24 Midshipmen are 6-0 for the first time since 1979, and the No. 12 Irish (6-1) are still trying to make a complete comeback from a shocking 16-14 home loss to Northern Illinois in Week 2.

Here’s everything you need to know about this weekend’s matchup.

2024 team records: Fighting Irish — 5-1 (W, 23-13 at Texas A&M; L, 16-14 vs. NIU; W, 66-7 at Purdue; W, 28-3 vs. Miami University; W, 31-24 vs. Louisville; W, 49-7 vs. Stanford; W, 31-13 at Georgia Tech); Midshipmen: 6-0 (W, 49-21 vs. Bucknell; W, 38-11 vs. Temple; W, 56-44 vs. Memphis; W, 41-18 at UAB; W, 34-7 at Air Force; Wm 51-17 vs. Charlotte)

Noting Notre Dame: Notre Dame once again has one of the best pass efficiency defenses in the country. The Fighting Irish rank sixth in that category after finishing first in 2023. The offense is a work in progress, but it has been steadily getting better. Even when it’s not operating at desired strength, quarterback Riley Leonard and tailbacks Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price are three of the most efficient runners in the game all averaging between 6.0 and 6.7 yards per carry. Look for them to have a big afternoon in New Jersey.

Noting Navy: Navy has the No. 2 pass efficiency offense in the country. Junior Blake Horvath has been that good about getting the ball out to his pass catchers. As always, the Midshipmen like to run the ball, too. They average 274.83 rushing yards per game, fourth-best total in the country. Their defense is not the best, however, ranking 92nd in yards allowed per game. Navy also only ranks 85th in time of possession, so this could be a more back-and-forth, offensive Notre Dame vs. Navy game than usual.
