Newsstand: Former Notre Dame forward John Shumate to be inducted into program's Ring of Honor
Another Notre Dame men’s basketball icon will see his name and jersey number raised in the Purcell Pavilion rafters. John Shumate, a forward for the Irish from 1971-74, will be the 10th player inducted into the program’s Ring of Honor, the team announced Tuesday. His enshrinement will be Dec. 11 during the home game against Marquette.
“No one embodies the spirit of the Notre Dame man more than John Shumate,” Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey said in a statement. “A great player and a coach/teacher for us. He remains to this day a great ambassador for the University and our basketball program.”
Shumate averaged 22.6 points and 11.6 rebounds in his Notre Dame career. He was a two-time All-American and is one of six Irish players to average a double-double for his career. He put up 24 points and 11 rebounds in a Jan. 19, 1974 win over then-No. 1 UCLA, which ended the Bruins’ record 88-game win streak.

Shumate still holds the program’s career field-goal percentage mark, at 61 percent. He shot 62.7 percent in 1973-74, which still stands as the fifth-highest single-season figure in program history. His 703 points that year are eighth most in a season. He is one of four players to score at least 40 points in a game.
The Phoenix Suns took Shumate with the No. 4 overall pick in the 1974 NBA Draft. He played six professional seasons, averaging 12.3 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. After ending his playing career, he was the head coach at Grand Canyon from 1983-86 and SMU from 1988-95. He spent 1995-98 as an assistant with the Toronto Raptors. He was the head coach of the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury in 2003 and a Suns assistant in 2009-10.

Quote of the Day
“From a size of the game or importance of the game standpoint, this game is just as important us as Norfolk. That’s no disrespect to Notre Dame. That’s not coach talk. That’s just the way you have to prepare to be consistent. I don’t think you can do anything with consistency when one thing is more important than the other.”
