Notre Dame vs. Navy live updates: first quarter
• Navy has won the toss and elected to defer. Sam Hartman and the Irish will start with the football. Here we go.
• Hartman’s first throw in a Notre Dame uniform is complete, to junior receiver Jayden Thomas. Thomas found the soft spot in the zone for a first down.
• Notre Dame found itself in a 3rd and 12 and Navy blitzed, but Hartman found Audric Estimé on a check down for a big gainer. Ideal start to the season for the junior running back.
• Estimé caps off a 12-play, 81-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. Spencer Shrader’s first PAT in a Notre Dame uniform is good. Estimé had 51 of those 81 yards. What a start for the Irish. Notre Dame 7, Navy 0.
• Quarterback Tai Lavatai trots onto the field for Navy as the Midshipmen start their first drive. Daba Fofana gets the first touch and the fullback picks up 5.
• Fofana gets Navy across midfield by himself. Navy is gaining some easy yards with that triple option on its first possession.
• On fourth down, Lavatai had two receivers open and the throw was there. Neither caught the ball. Notre Dame catches a huge break and gets the ball back up 7-0. Perhaps a miscommunication, perhaps wet conditions, but a missed opportunity for the Midshipmen.
• Audric Estimé breaks a big gainer but loses his first fumble of the season. Navy safety Rayuan Lane knocked it loose, but fortunately for the Irish, it goes out of bounds at midfield.
• Touchdown, Fighting Irish. Jadarian Price’s first career carry goes for 19 yards and a touchdown. The Irish complete a 7-play, 63-yard drive, mostly on the ground. Notre Dame 14, Navy 0.
Second quarter
• Tai Lavatai’s QB keeper just barely picks up a Navy first down on the first play of the second quarter. Replay indicates Lavatai was just short. We’ll see what Navy coach Brian Newberry chooses to do if it winds up being fourth-and-inches.
• He’s a yard short. Navy goes. Lavatai spins around and picks up the first down, keeping the drive alive.
• Navy fumbles, forced by Marist Liufau. Looked like DJ Brown loosened it up. Jack Kiser recovers, but he was out of bounds. The play is under review, and the call stands. The Midshipmen keep the football.
• After the initial shock, Notre Dame’s defense has settled down. Liufau made the stop on second down, Cam Hart and Jordan Botelho on third. Navy punts, and Notre Dame will take over at its own 22.
• Touchdown, Notre Dame. Jaden Greathouse goes 35 yards for a touchdown on a seam route from the slot, and Hartman hits him with a perfect throw. First target, first catch, first touchdown for Greathouse. Notre Dame 21, Navy 0.
• After converting a third down rushing attempt, Lavatai is down on the field. He jogs off the field. The Midshipmen were expected to play multiple quarterbacks today. Xavier Arline enters for Navy.
• Lavatai re-enters the game as Navy is driving with less than five minutes to go in the half. Midshipmen ball, first down in Notre Dame territory.
• Navy takes a timeout after a tackle for loss by Javontae Jean-Baptiste on second-and-5. The Midshipmen face third-and-7 with exactly two minutes to play. As a reminder, Navy will get the ball back at the start of the third quarter.

SEC Championship game comments draw ire
• Marcus Freeman takes a timeout after a Lavatai keeper goes for three yards. Fourth-and-4 and an interesting decision for Navy coming up.
• Navy elects to kick the field goal, but Evan Warren’s 37-yard field goal attempt is no good. Notre Dame retains possession with 1:55 to play at its own 26.
• Two Hartman passes and a Devyn Ford run have the Irish across midfield. The Irish take a timeout after Chris Tyree’s third reception gets them to the Navy 45.
• Touchdown, Fighting Irish. Hartman finds Jayden Thomas for 14 yards and a score on a post route. Thomas ties Tyree for the Irish lead in receptions with three of Hartman’s 14. Notre Dame 28, Navy 0.
Third quarter
• Lavatai’s pitch on second down goes awry and the Irish believed they had the football, but the Midshipmen jumped on it first, according to the referees. JD Bertrand, who thought he had the recovery, chased down Fofana for a third-down stop.
• Navy, on fourth-and-3 with a 28-0 deficit, punted it away. Notre Dame takes over on its own 37 after a 31-yard punt.
• Estimé, back in the game after fumbling in the first quarter, has the Irish across midfield with three carries, each going for seven yards or more.
• Touchdown, Fighting Irish. Hartman sidesteps a blitz, escapes to his left and finds a wide open Greathouse for his second touchdown of the day. It was Hartman’s third as well. Notre Dame 35, Navy 0.
• Defensive linemen Joshua Burnham and Gabriel Rubio combine for the sack, and Navy has to punt from its own two. Tyree had a nice return, slipping down inside the Navy 40.
• Spencer Shrader’s first field goal attempt in a Notre Dame uniform is no good. Still 35-0 Irish.
• A botched snap, recovered by Navy, sets up fourth and a whole heck of a lot for the Midshipmen. Tyree makes the fair catch at the Notre Dame 40, where Hartman returns to the field for the Irish.
• Another touchdown for Sam Hartman. Deion Colzie takes a quick screen 25 yards for a touchdown, for Hartman’s fourth score of the day. Notre Dame 42, Navy 0.
• The shutout is no more. A 30-yard Evan Warren field goal shortens the Navy deficit to 39. Notre Dame 42, Navy 3.
• Sophomore quarterback Steve Angeli enters the game for Notre Dame.
• Final: Notre Dame 42, Navy 3.
