No. 8 Notre Dame’s final regular season home game of the 2024 season kicks off against Virginia at 3:30 p.m. ET. Follow along with Blue & Gold’s live updates of this afternoon’s game between the Fighting Irish (8-1) and Cavaliers (5-4) from South Bend.

Updates are in reverse chronological order, with most recent occurrences detailed at the top of the page and older ones at the bottom.

END 3: Notre Dame 35, Virginia 7

11/16/2024 05:16:20 PM

The Fighting Irish will open the fourth quarter with third and goal from the five. It’s been an impressive drive to this point for the Notre Dame offense, running right at the Virginia defense. Jeremiyah Love is up to 132 rushing yards.

TOUCHDOWN Virginia

11/16/2024 05:04:20 PM

On fourth and two, Virginia confuses the Notre Dame defense with a zone read. Quarterback Tony Muskett keeps the ball and takes it 18 yards into the end zone to make the score 35-7 Irish with 7:52 left in the third quarter.

TOUCHDOWN Notre Dame

11/16/2024 04:54:17 PM

Jeremiyah Love says see ya from 76 yards and it’s 35-0 Notre Dame with 9:38 left in the third quarter. The Irish are going to be able to get their reserves a whole lot of playing time in this one.

Leonard Moore returns for Notre Dame

11/16/2024 04:51:48 PM

After suffering what looked like a head or neck injury, Notre Dame freshman corner Leonard Moore has returned for the Irish in the second half.

Riley Leonard throws interception

11/16/2024 04:48:20 PM

Leonard doesn’t make a good decision or throw, and it’s picked off to start the second half. Virginia has the ball near midfield trailing 28-0, and the Cavaliers are changing their quarterback from Anthony Colandrea to Tony Muskett.

HALFTIME: Notre Dame 28, Virginia 0

11/16/2024 04:20:27 PM

Walk-on kicker Marcello Diomede misses a field goal from 54 yards wide left, and that brings us to halftime of what has been a wacky blowout to this point.

Xavier Watts interception

11/16/2024 04:17:34 PM

It’s a takeaway parade at Notre Dame Stadium now. Watts has his fourth interception of the season, 11th his career and fifth Irish turnover forced of the game.

TOUCHDOWN Notre Dame

11/16/2024 04:14:02 PM

The Irish make good on another Virginia turnover in the form of a 16-yard receiving touchdown for tight end Mitchell Evans, his second score in as many games. All of a sudden, it’s 28-0 Notre Dame in the final minute of the first half.

Leonard Moore interception

11/16/2024 04:11:23 PM

Notre Dame freshman cornerback Leonard Moore gets his second career interception to set up the Irish offense with a chance to put more points on the board before the half. Moore gets up extremely woozy, though, and goes straight to the injury tent.

Marcus Freeman calms down

11/16/2024 04:06:42 PM

In response to the fake punt touchdown that was called back, Marcus Freeman was as fired up on a sideline as he’s ever been. He spent the most recent TV timeout calmly chatting with the referees, who seem none too pleased with the Notre Dame head coach’s fiery antics in response to the flag on that called that play back.

NOTRE DAME touchdown

11/16/2024 04:01:40 PM

After the two penalties that cost Notre Damed a touchdown, Adon Shuler intercepted a pass and returned it inside the five-yard line and Riley Leonard threw a touchdown pass to Cooper Flanagan a couple plays later. The Irish got the scoreboard to say Notre Dame 21, Virginia 0 after all.

Costly penalties take Notre Dame points off the board

11/16/2024 03:54:28 PM

Notre Dame had not one but two penalties that took touchdowns off the board. First it was illegal hands to the face on center Pat Coogan on a 78-yard connection between Riley Leonard and Jayden Harrison. Then Notre Dame executed a fake, but the officials flagged Jordan Faison’s sneaky 73-yard score for an illegal formation.

TOUCHDOWN Notre Dame

11/16/2024 03:45:11 PM

The Fighting Irish extend their lead to 14-0 on an eight-yard touchdown pass from Riley Leonard to Jayden Harrison. It’s a heck of a drive for the Notre Dame offense, going 88 yards on nine plays, to create some breathing room on the scoreboard. Of note, though — wide receiver Jaden Greathouse was helped to the sideline in the middle of the possession after being tackled awkwardly at the end of a catch and run.

Xavier Watts fumble recovery

11/16/2024 03:33:12 PM

The Notre Dame makes it so the Max Hurleman muffed punt doesn’t matter. Watts falls on a fumble to give the ball back to the struggling Notre Dame offense deep in its own territory.

Max Hurleman muffs a punt

11/16/2024 03:29:27 PM

There have now been two major special teams miscues, one per side, both in the form of a muffed kick. Hurleman’s misplay gives Virginia the ball at the Notre Dame 42.

End of the first: Notre Dame 7, Virginia 0

11/16/2024 03:13:19 PM

It’s been a bit of a slog so far for both teams. The Irish are on the board via a gift, but neither team has gotten close to scoring otherwise. Both sides are averaging below 5.0 yards per play. The Cavaliers have outgained the Irish 74 to 54 in total yards.

Jack Kiser makes a play on fourth down

11/16/2024 02:55:41 PM

Kiser is setting the Notre Dame record for games played in an Irish uniform at 63, and he makes a phenomenal play on fourth down to get the Irish off the field. The Cavaliers were throwing short on fourth and short, and Kiser was all over the intended target.

James Rendell’s best punt of the season

11/16/2024 02:51:45 PM

Notre Dame’s hand-picked Australian punting prospect launches a 64-yard punt with a one-yard return, by far his best boot of the season. If your offense is going to go three-and-out in response to one from the opposition, might as well own the field position battle.

Virginia three-and-out

11/16/2024 02:44:31 PM

The Notre Dame defense does its job on its first series of the evening. Cornerback Christian Gray makes a great tackle on third down, stopping UVA quarterback Anthony Colandrea short of the line to gain in the open field.

TOUCHDOWN Notre Dame

11/16/2024 02:39:51 PM

A roughing the passer penalty puts the Irish closer to the goal line, and running back Jeremiyah Love easily bounces right across the goal line for the game’s opening score. He’s had at least one touchdown in all 10 Irish games this season.

Opening kickoff … NOTRE DAME ball

11/16/2024 02:35:49 PM

Chris Tyree muffs the (very short) opening kickoff, and Max Hurleman easily recovers on one of the wackier special teams plays you’ll ever see. It’s Irish ball deep in Virginia territory to start.

COIN TOSS

11/16/2024 02:33:04 PM

Notre Dame wins and elects to defer to the second half. Former Irish skill player Chris Tyree is back deep to return for Virginia.

Senior Day ceremony gets going

11/16/2024 02:24:07 PM

With nine minutes remaining until kickoff, the Fighting Irish begin to honor 29 seniors for Senior Day festivities. All the proceedings entail today are the mentioning of each player’s name as he runs out of the tunnel to hug head coach Marcus Freeman. The players’ families are waiting for them on the 50-yard line.
