Until Saturday, no one at Notre Dame had scored 40-plus points in an Atlantic Coast Conference game. Markus Burton did it in four overtimes against California as the Irish won 112-110.

With a whopping 21 points in the overtimes, Burton finished with 43 and broke the program record for points in an ACC game. Matt Farrell previously held the mark with 37 on Feb. 7, 2018 at Boston College.

Additionally, Burton put up Notre Dame’s first 40-piece since Luke Harangody dropped 40 on Feb. 28, 2008 at Louisville. His 43 points were the most any Irish player has scored since Adrian Dantley had 49 against Air Force on Feb. 10, 1975 (all information on records is courtesy of Notre Dame Athletics).

“I wasn’t gonna force it, but I knew it was my time to put on a show and will my team to victory, and that’s what I had to do,” Burton said. “I feel like the coaching staff trusts me, but also the whole team around me.”

Burton started hot, scoring 18 on 7-of-11 shooting in the first half. He slowed down after the break, scoring only 4 on 0-of-6 shooting in the second. But something clicked during overtime, and he went 6-of-9 from the field and 4-of-4 from beyond the arc during the additional half Notre Dame had to play.

“Still some stuff I think we can clean up,” Shrewsberry said. “Sometimes as you get late in the game like this, when he doesn’t have it, what are we going to? But then, how can we try to free him in a different way? That’s stuff that we can work on and keep growing from, but he made some huge shots, man.”

Burton pulled up from the left wing and made a three with 36 seconds left in overtime No. 1, tying the game at 79. He did it again for what appeared to be the dagger with 1:38 left in overtime No. 2, before Cal stormed back. He hit two triples in overtime No. 3, which somehow still weren’t enough. But they helped extend the game just long enough for Notre Dame to win it.

“Markus was unbelievable,” Irish head coach Micah Shrewsberry said. “He was unreal.”

Burton fouled out in overtime No. 4, and he was noticeably distraught as he walked to the bench. However, he watched as his teammates — led by Matt Allocco with 8 points including the dagger three with 15 seconds left — picked him up.

“I was very upset in the moment, but at the same time, I still have to be the bigger person and cheer on my teammates from the sideline and make sure they’re doing what they need to do to get this dub,” Burton said. “That’s where my head was at, and obviously Matt and J.R. [Konieczny], they led us to victory tonight.”
