On Dec. 3, news broke that Notre Dame would be hiring Mike Brown as its new receivers coach, replacing Chansi Stuckey who was fired less than a week prior.

And exactly a week after the initial report, Brown’s hire became official. According to the university’s press release, Brown will begin his coaching duties immediately and will be with the Irish wideout group throughout the preparations for the 2023 Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl.

Marcus Freeman and Brown worked together at Cincinnati. Brown was the wide receivers coach there from 2019-22 before he followed Luke Fickell to Wisconsin this past offseason. He took on the title of passing game coordinator to go along with wide receivers coach in his last year at Cincinnati. He was named associate head coach of the Badgers in his one year with them.

Brown, 34, started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Michigan in 2016. He was a GA at Delaware in 2017. He spent one year as the running backs coach at Liberty in 2019 before getting with the Bearcats. Freeman had already been at Cincinnati for two seasons before Brown arrived. The two overlapped on Fickell’s staff for two seasons before Freeman took the defensive coordinator job at Notre Dame.

A native of Charlottesville, Virginia, Brown played quarterback at Liberty from 2008-11. He was a two-time Big South Offensive Player of the Year and a three-time Big South All-Conference team member. As a senior, Brow had 2,664 passing yards and 18 touchdowns as well as 437 rushing yards and 9 rushing touchdowns. Brown finished his career with 6,072 passing yards, 45 passing touchdowns, 1,875 rushing yards, 29 rushing touchdowns. He ranked second in school history with 7,947 total offensive yards at the time of his graduation.

Brown signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted free agent in 2012. He spent most of his time with the Jags as a wide receiver on the practice squad, but he did catch two touchdown passes in the 2013 season. He finished his short stay in the NFL with 39 catches for 534 yards.

The Notre Dame receiver room is experiencing an overhaul, as four Irish wideouts have entered the transfer portal since the regular season ended, and the Irish added ex-Florida International wideout Kris Mitchell from the transfer portal a few days ago.

Notre Dame may add a couple extra transfer portal receivers as well. The Irish will sign three receivers in the 2024 class on National Signing Day Dec. 20, highlighted by five-star Cam Williams.
