Mike Brey’s first Notre Dame point guard has reached his first NCAA Tournament as a head coach.
Former Irish guard and longtime assistant Martin Ingelsby is headed to March Madness after his Delaware Blue Hens beat UNC Wilmington 59-55 in the Colonial Athletic Association title game Tuesday night, clinching the program’s first NCAA Tournament bid since 2014.
Ingelsby is in his sixth season at Delaware, which became the first No. 5 seed to win the CAA Tournament in its history. The Blue Hens are 22-12 and went 10-8 in conference games.
The 43-year-old Ingelsby played at Notre Dame from 1997-2001 and was a three-year starter. His final season was Brey’s first as Irish head coach. He joined the Irish’s staff in 2003 as the coordinator of basketball operations and was promoted to assistant coach in 2009. He has a 95-86 overall record at Delaware, where Brey was the head coach from 1995-2000.

Tweets of the day
Notre Dame plays its first ACC Tournament game Thursday night against the winner of Wednesday’s Virginia Tech-Clemson matchup. The Irish have been in Brooklyn since Sunday and practicing there all week.
Nick Lezynski, a graduate assistant and defensive analyst at Notre Dame from 2018-21, was formally hired as Vanderbilt’s linebackers coach Monday and sent a goodbye tweet Tuesday. He departed the Irish staff last month to reunite with former Irish defensive coordinator Clark Lea, who’s entering his second season as the Commodores’ head coach.
Quote of the day
“The top safety prospect in the draft, Hamilton is a tough study at an event like the combine. At 6-foot-4, he’s not a great short-area quickness player, and at 220 pounds, he’s not exactly built for events like the explosive 40-yard dash. He did wow with a 38-inch vertical jump, but his 4.59-second run in the 40-yard dash wasn’t ideal.
“Still, let’s be real: Hamilton’s football instincts, leadership and playmaking ability can’t be judged in the 40-yard dash. Just as some players will run great times and not be great football players, some great football players aren’t going to run fast 40 times. Hamilton falls into that category, and any team that overthinks his ability as a Day 1 impact defensive player is doing it wrong.”
— ESPN NFL Draft analyst Matt Miller on Notre Dame safety Kyle Hamilton’s combine performance.
