Newsstand: Former Notre Dame DL Jarron Jones to play in USFL

Another Notre Dame player is headed to the USFL.
Former Irish defensive lineman Jarron Jones, now an offensive tackle, will play for the Tampa Bay Bandits this spring after the team chose him in the first round of the USFL Supplemental Draft Thursday with the No. 7 pick.
Jones played for Notre Dame from 2012-16, and compiled 105 career tackles, 19.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. He was a starter at defensive end in 2014 and 2016. He missed most of 2015 due to a knee injury. He has spent time on several NFL teams’ practice squads, most recently the Pittsburgh Steelers’ in 2020. He also played in the XFL. In October, he was suspended 10 games by the NFL following a sentencing for a 2020 assault charge.
Jones is the third former Notre Dame player to head to the USFL. Ex-Irish linebackers Te’Von Coney (2015-18) and Kolin Hill (2014) were selected in the regular draft in February.
The USFL will begin its inaugural season on April 16. Its eight teams will play in Birmingham, Ala. Despite the same name and use of old team nicknames and logos, it is not associated or affiliated with the former USFL that operated from 1982-86.

Quote of the day
“We turned it over too much in the first half. We kicked it around. We’re usually pretty good with the ball. You’re going to have to outscore them a little bit. You’re not going to just shut them down. We scored 80, but they were too efficient.”
