Former Notre Dame quarterback Drew Pyne is on the move again. He’ll spend his sixth year of collegiate football in the Mid-American Conference, and Pyne has two years to play there.

Pyne’s new destination is Bowling Green where he’ll play for new Falcons’ head coach Eddie George, who starred at Ohio State before a long career in the NFL.

On April 1, Pyne entered the NCAA Transfer Portal after a short stint at Missouri. He also spent a season at Arizona State in 2023 and of course played for Notre Dame from 2020-22.

Pyne redshirted in 2020 and played in a couple games in 2021 and performed admirably in both contests, helping lead the Irish to a win over Wisconsin and tossing a touchdown against Cincinnati, although the contest against the Bearcats ended in defeat.

Pyne started 10 games for the Irish in 2022. He went 164-of-254 (64.6 percent) for 2,021 yards (8.0 yards per attempt), 22 touchdowns and 6 interceptions after filling in for injured signal-caller Tyler Buchner.

After being informed the Irish would turn to the transfer portal for a quarterback — who, of course, wound up being Sam Hartman — Pyne bolted to Arizona State, where his 2023 campaign was marred by injuries. He spent 2024 at Missouri, where he served as a backup for veteran starter Brady Cook.

Pyne played meaningful snaps in three games for the Tigers as Cook dealt with various injuries, including one start. While Missouri fans couldn’t have felt confident going into that start against Oklahoma after Pyne threw three interceptions the week prior at Alabama, the ex-Irish quarterback delivered.

Pyne threw three touchdown passes in a 30-23 Tigers win, including a game-tying score to wide receiver Theo Wease Jr. with 1:03 to play.

Cook exhausted his eligibility, but Missouri brought in competition. Penn State transfer Beau Pribula came aboard, and the team brought back incumbent backup Sam Horn, whom Pyne was acquired to replace after the dual-sport athlete underwent Tommy John Surgery to fix a torn UCL suffered in baseball.

After the Tigers completed spring ball, it appears Pyne was the odd man out. He will be the odds-on favorite to start at Bowling Green.

He has two years of eligibility as he’s used a redshirt year, medical redshirt and the 2020 season did not count against anyone’s eligibility.
