Newsstand: Former Notre Dame QB Ron Powlus III accepts key position on football staff

Notre Dame is hiring former Irish quarterback and legacy alum Ron Powlus III as an assistant director of football operations, according to a report from John Brice of Football Scoop.
Powlus — who has battled Type-1 diabetes since he was 9 years old — had to medically retire after a two-year career with the Irish. But he’ll be back with the team in an operations role, under director of football operations Olivia Mitchell and alongside assistant DFO Nina Baloun. He’s the latest in a long line of off-field additions the Irish have made throughout the offseason.
Powlus’ dad, also Ron Powlus, was a quarterback at Notre Dame from 1993-97 and is currently the deputy athletics director for football. His brother, Tommy Powlus, is a walk-on linebacker with the team.
Powlus III was a scholarship quarterback with the Irish after he starred for four years at nearby Mishawaka (Ind.) Penn.

Quote of the day
“You’ll see a different type of leadership. I want it to be organic. I want it to be authentic. That’s what I look forward to seeing in spring.
“Who are the guys who are going to be energy-providers? Who’s going to be the guys that, at times, need to challenge other guys? Who’s going to be an older guy that puts his arm around a freshman? Those are all different things that you observed in terms of leadership.”
— Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman
