Newsstand: Notre Dame guard Billy Schrauth named to Lombardi Award watch list

Notre Dame redshirt junior guard Billy Schrauth made the Lombardi Award watch list, the Irish announced Tuesday.
Schrauth is one of 54 early candidates for the award, which honors the best offensive lineman, defensive lineman, linebacker or tight end in college football. He is also on the watch list (along with redshirt junior offensive tackle Aamil Wagner) for the Outland Trophy, which is given to the top interior lineman in the sport.
Five Fighting Irish have won the Lombardi Award in the past: defensive end Walt Patulski (1971), defensive end Ross Browner (1977), defensive tackle Chris Zorich (1990), offensive lineman Aaron Taylor (1993) and linebacker Manti Te’o (2012).
Schrauth allowed only 8 quarterback pressures in 2024, producing the team’s highest Pro Football Focus pass-blocking grade at 79.8. He did that despite missing four games due to an ankle injury that we would later learn required surgery.

The Irish thought Schrauth could become one of the nation’s best guards last year. He didn’t quite reach that level, but he might in 2025 with a full, healthy season.
