Newsstand: Notre Dame guard Hannah Hidalgo breaks ACC record
If it wasn’t clear already, it is now: Notre Dame guard Hannah Hidalgo is in the midst of arguably the best freshman year in Atlantic Coast Conference history. Hidalgo won her 11th ACC Rookie of the Week award, which broke the conference record for most all time.
In games against No. 15 Louisville and Florida State, respectively, Hidalgo averaged 28.5 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists and 6 steals. Most of the rebounds and assists came during a 98-94 double-overtime win over the Seminoles on Sunday, against whom Hidalgo made 13 of her 14 free-throw attempts.
Hidalgo came close to a triple-double in Sunday’s Irish win, putting up 27 points, grabbing 7 rebounds and dishing out 9 assists. She averages 25.1, 6.2 and 5.6, along with 5.1 steals as a freshman.
It’s worth wondering where Notre Dame would be if Hidalgo wasn’t this good, this quickly. Star junior guard Olivia Miles will miss the entire season with a knee injury and only two other Irish — junior guard Sonia Citron and junior forward Maddy Westbeld — average double-digit points. Citron missed nearly two months earlier this season with a knee injury of her own, further jeopardizing head coach Niele Ivey’s roster.
With Hidalgo leading the charge, the Irish are No. 16 in the Associated Press Top 25 and a projected No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament. They’re back in action at 6 p.m. Thursday at Purcell Pavilion in South Bend against No. 6 North Carolina State.

Quote of the day
“My last name and what my father accomplished means a bunch to me, and I really just try to uphold that. I try to do things the right way. It’s not necessarily about my quality of play or how good I am or whatever, it’s about doing things the right way.”
