If it wasn’t already clear that Notre Dame freshman guard Hannah Hidalgo is one of the best college basketball players in the country, it is now. The Associated Press named Hidalgo the national player of the week in women’s basketball Tuesday for her performance this past Thursday against Western Michigan.

Hidalgo scored 26 points — her ninth 20-or-more-point game in 10 tries — grabbed 11 rebounds, dished out 10 assists for her first career triple double. She also added 5 steals in an 84-47 Irish win.

Notre Dame is 9-1 and hasn’t lost since its season-opening defeat against South Carolina, and Hidalgo’s dominance is the main reason why. Despite injuries to stalwart guards Olivia Miles and Sonia Citron, Hidalgo is averaging 23.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 6.0 steals.

Hidalgo and the Irish are in the midst of 10 days off before a 2 p.m. ET showdown Dec. 31 at Syracuse.

Notre Dame Tweets of the day

What a catch by Notre Dame junior wide receiver Deion Colzie.

Great work in the community by the Irish in El Paso, Texas.

Former star Irish linebacker Jaylon Smith has a new team, and one fighting for a playoff spot at that.

Quote of the day

“He’s shown such a tremendous amount of growth. My experience with him when I got there in February was just trying to evaluate who this kid is and what he’s capable of. The improvements he made from February to this point now, he’s going to have a chance to be a really good player especially if he continues on that trend of being able to make the same improvements he made last year this upcoming year. This is a great opportunity for him to try to springboard that and have the opportunity start and show what he can do.”
