Notre Dame graduate linebacker JD Bertrand was named one of three finalists for the Wuerffel Trophy, the Wuerffel Foundation announced Tuesday. It’s one of college football’s most prestigious awards.

The Wuerffel Trophy is college football’s premier community service award, and its 2023 finalists are Bertrand, Michigan senior running back Blake Corum and Georgia redshirt junior wide receiver Ladd McConkey. The winner will be announced Dec. 8 during ESPN’s college football awards show, and the formal presentation of the trophy will take place Feb. 17.

“An Eagle Scout who was selected as a member of the 2022 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, Bertrand credits his mother for his commitment to community service,” Notre Dame said in a press release. “He has done extensive work with Uplifting Athletes, serving as the chapter president for two years and earning a spot on the organization’s Rare Disease Champion Team in 2022. After the pandemic, he played a role in staging multiple events for the organization, raising more than $80,000. He donates part of his scholarship check and NIL earnings to charity, and he visits the Ronald McDonald House before every home game.”

Bertrand finished the 2023 season as Notre Dame’s leading tackler for the third-straight year. He also totaled 2.5 sacks, a forced fumble and four pass breakups.

Notre Dame Tweets of the day

Freshman wide receiver Rico Flores Jr. seems to be displeased at the Irish letting go of wide receivers coach Chansi Stuckey.

Notre Dame has been one of the most consistent football schools in the past decade.

Oh, you better believe it.

Quote of the day

“First of all, I want to thank Chansi for all of the work he put into our program. I wish Chansi and his family all the best.

“Over the past few days, we had continued discussions on the overall performance of our wide receiver group and my expectations for the development of that position. I decided it was in the program’s best interest to part ways.”
