At Day 1 of of practice at the All-American Bowl in San Antonio, one Notre Dame signee stood out above the rest: Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa.

Viliamu-Asa was No. 4 on the list of top performers from the West team, according to On3. The review from On3 national scout Cody Bellaire is enough to get Irish fans excited about potentially the next great linebacker in South Bend.

“Viliamu-Asa was flying all over the field and triggering to the football so quickly during the 9-on-7 and team periods of practice,” Bellaire wrote Tuesday. “His ability to beat offensive linemen to their spot and blow up plays before they even get going is special. He was extremely physical and was borderline violent, even without pads on.

“He showed some flashes in coverage as well, especially during the team period. He broke up a pass over the middle of the field and made his presence felt in the box. He showed he’s as advertised against the run and showed glimpses of being a factor in the passing game as well. [I’m] excited to see how he plays in space throughout the week of All-American practices.”

Additionally, On3 director of scouting and rankings Charles Power was at the East team’s All-American Bowl practice Tuesday. He said Notre Dame edge rusher signee Bryce Young was one of a few defensive linemen who showed flashes of greatness.

Power also noted that Irish running back signee Kedren Young likely doesn’t skip leg day, which could help him see the field early as a powerful ball carrier.

Quote of the day

“I say this all the time — forget the rankings. My entire high school career, I just played the sport I love and was blessed being recognized. I feel there’s nothing I have to prove to anyone necessarily with college ball coming up.”
