At first glance, it might seem odd that Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer was named to the 2022 Preseason Fred Biletnikoff Award Watch List. Why? While anyone who catches a pass is eligible for the honor, this is a wide receivers’ award in practice. Mayer is just that good.

The list of outstanding pass-catchers was released on Thursday, and Mayer is one of just two tight ends featured. Georgia star Brock Bowers is the other.

Mayer caught 71 passes for 840 yards and seven touchdowns during his sophomore campaign in 2021. He will look to improve upon those numbers this fall, especially given Notre Dame is facing uncertainty at the receiver position.

The 6-4, 250-pound tight end is widely considered to be the best NFL Draft product at his position (Bowers is a true sophomore), with several mock drafts showing Mayer could come off the board within the first ten picks.
