Newsstand: What Wake Forest’s coach said about Notre Dame QB Sam Hartman’s transfer decision
Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson discussed Notre Dame graduate quarterback Sam Hartman’s decision to transfer from the Demon Deacons to the Irish with On3’s Andy Staples on Tuesday.
Clawson, on Staples’ YouTube show, implied that name, image and likeness money played a role in Hartman’s thought process.
“Sam gave us five years,” Clawson said. “And Sam was very upfront and honest that, ‘Coach, I want to go to the NFL. But if these crazy numbers that people are throwing out there are real, I’m crazy to not at least test that market.’ And so that happened with him.”
Clawson did not discuss whether Hartman was directly or indirectly offered NIL money by a specific school, Notre Dame or otherwise, before entering the transfer portal. He did say that eight of his players — he did not name which eight — were offered money to enter the transfer portal by different schools through back channels like alumni or local trainers but chose to stay at Wake Forest.
In Hartman’s five seasons at Wake Forest with Clawson, the Demon Deacons went 36-24 and appeared in a bowl game in all five seasons. Clawson is 59-53 in his nine seasons in Winston-Salem, N.C., but he discussed on Staples’ show that he knew when he took the job that the first two years would be rough while he built up his roster. He went 6-18 in those two seasons, and his record in the past seven is 53-35.
